The movie is... like the show? Kinda boring. The plot is not entirely as interesting as the premise.
It is, however, FUCKING GORGEOUS; I'm not sure any visual media has ever showcased the beautiful nature of space to the degree that this show does. And since it's a movie, the production values are even higher.

Eh, I wouldn't say that. It's basically one of those 'SOL cute girls doing cute things' type shows only with SPACE PIRATES! to spice things up. I ended up liking the cast, although I wish we got to learn more about the Betenmaru crew. Did they even explain why that one dude was a cyborg?
Also the science and world building was actually pretty solid. Wish we got to see more of the Galactic Empire, though.
BTW, the series is based on some Light Novels, right? Does that mean we could get a second season?

It is. They're awesome, maybe even more awesome than the show. There's tons of unused material, the anime only covered the first 3/12 books and the last 2 story arcs (race and pirate hunters) and the movie were all anime original stories.
I believe officially the LN series is on hiatus after volume 12, but not finished.
The last media released for it was the movie right?

I enjoyed it enough when it was airing. But admittedly I'm easily swayed by pretty looking shows. Final couple of arcs were pretty cool from memory and the characters were likable enough.
The thing that stuck with me the most was the OP though. Still pops into my head occasionally.

Quartz was a miracle of the universe.
We have Dirty Pair, and it's not like we aren't the anime sci-fi board of 4chan. It's actually /m/ on the spaceships alone, but it isn't "robots", which is the staple food here. Not that anyone has the budget to animate a lot of movement on a show with all of the series being made these days, but this one had a bit of it, which was nice.

I always found it odd that Scnitzer is machine enough that he can walk around in environments that the rest of the crew requires spacesiuts for yet he somehow got sick enough to be hospitalized with everyone else from the Betenmaru during the Replacement Crew arc.

Great and feel just like any other arc of the series. Seeing it has huge repercussions with now being billions of more hyperspace passages I wonder how they'll incorporate it in the story when they hopefully animate more of the novels. I guess they'll just mention it as "that stuff we did during vacation". I hope Kanata kun will be back too and they develop his romance subplot with Grunhilde.

It was a really neat design. Though still somehow gave off a Heroman vibe to me, maybe it was just Komatsu's voice tricking my brain.
