So thoughts on the feasibility of the Banshee aircraft carrier?
>>
>>14213223
Literally unfeasible.
Ask /k/, they'll tell you the same thing.
Looks cool though.
>>
I think I want one
>>
Kinda stupid outside of the context of its fiction.

I mean, in a world where you can't get boats or even land carriers working to suit your mobile airbase needs, you might as well take it to the skies.
>>
/k/ had a discussion about this a while ago where this came up. Turns out the USAF actually did some investigation on the topic and even came up with some concepts.

>Ask /k/, they'll tell you the same thing.
/k/ is fucking retarded half the time.

>open printing
lmao

That said, yeah it's not a very good idea. Even with some sort of obscene power source, I can't imagine there being any reason for sticking a big hunk of metal up in the sky were it'd be way easier to shoot down than sink a ship.

Only thing I could think of, would be some absurd point-defense system paired with a series of satellite intervention weapons. Which at that point would probably account for far too much weight.

It still doesn't change the fact that an aircraft carrier could get whatever plane it needed where it needed it to be in comparable time. Or if not a carrier, just a base launched craft.
>>
>>14217606
The other half of the time they've got the best knowledge on weapons and the military on 4chan.

That said, did the alien planet in Yukikaze even have an ocean for an aircraft carrier?
>>
>>14217639
A jungle denser than you could imagine, and the territory distribution had nothing in the way of waterspace to warrant a carrier fleet.

As I alluded to before, when all you have is the sky to work with for your force projection needs, might as well build that airborne carrier and glide it through the Passageway.

Anyone with a stick up their ass would find comfort in the fact that on the Antarctic side of the Passageway there's a carrier group on patrol.

A Japanese carrier group.
The OVA apparently lists the Admiral Isoroku as a Hillary Clinton class, or a derivative of.
>>
Lockheed Martin drew up a proposal for an atomic powered airplane aircraft carrier, in the 1960s.

Once we have a viable fusion reactor. that has the power to weight ratio needed.

>Hillary Clinton
Wew lad, that worries me. At this point I've given up because I hate both candidates for different reasons. I'm considering not voting. Shilldog or Meme Machine, pick your poison. Sage for off topic and /pol/ shit but seriously, the next four years are going to be bad for the U.S. and I don't know what to do besides move out of Commiefornia and live in a small Midwestern town where I can be part of a community and actually have a piece in local or state politics. Mormons might be retarded but they're doing pretty well on the social front.

I'm worried. I'll leave the rest out but Brave New World and 1984 are itching at the back of my mind again. It won't be hell while I'm alive but I wouldn't be surprised if the country was nearly unrecognizable in three generations or four.

I love mecha, I swear I love mecha as much as anything, but without some kind of moral revolution we will never be able to reach the day when it could become possible and I am willing to sacrifice technological progress for some moral reinstitution. Our technology is going to slowly cripple us while we continue on a path of hedonism. We'll get nowhere. I want us to break free from gravity's hold and traverse the planets and the stars but we cannot get there with technology alone. /m/en, I ask you to please, please raise the next generation of fleshbags into people who are not dependent on the state, on technology, on constant communication, or on sex. It doesn't matter if they aren't smart, there will always be someone to build mecha for us. They are a minority and not required for the general population to thrive. But they cannot be of weak character. If we become so involved with ourselves that we cannot escape our primitive instincts, we will collapse from the inside.

Basically, technology is love but do not let technology be life. Not until we perfect android waifus, at least.

Sage sage and triple sage for ranting. No need to read it but I needed to get it out.

>le degeneracy xD
>>
>>14218349
I'm not a /pol/tard by the way.
>implying foreign policy doesn't matter
>implying people don't listen to whatever the president tells them regardless of the actual state of affairs, which influences public opinion/thoughts a great deal
Obviously I'm going to be voting in the congressional elections. But it's silly to think that the president doesn't have significant influence over the direction of the country during his term.

It's not quite degeneracy (yet?) but there's a reason I mentioned BNW/1984. Obviously nothing new or revolutionary has popped up in the past decade or so to make the books significantly more relevant but I think we're still on the path to a well-meaning but dangerous country. I can't see the human race as a whole, starting from what I see in society today, overcome our current limitations and proliferate among the cosmos. Or even just build mecha for whatever reason we chose to. I just feel like we're stagnating, and I feel like we have been for a few decades.

Maybe everything will get better once we get fusion into high gear and I'm just being stupid. I don't know what technological advancement will push us along but I hope we can bring about another Renaissance or Enlightenment period, even just a small one. Otherwise we'll have the same problems we do today and nothing will ever change.

/k/ isn't that dumb anon, pretty much 99.99999% of mechs are not feasible at all. If you couldn't figure this out yourself you may have brain problems.

>>
>>14217949
Fusion designs can still run the risk of a steam explosion if things go tits up, right?

Steam explosions aren't really pretty either, regardless of whether or not contaminants are featured.
>>
>>14219195
Read the whole post before you reply to it.

>that dumb
Yeah that's a huge endorsement.
>>
>>14217713
Why not just build it in space and glide it down to atmosphere?
>>
>>14221089
you still have to put into orbit the pieces to assamble it.
in the books that how the made the banshees, orbital construction then glided into atmosphere and then into fairy
>>
>>14221382
We put a decent amount of material into space as is.

And honestly I'm kinda interested in the gliding ability of a very large flying wing design like the OVA Banshee, and whether or not that helps to reduce its actual thrust production needs and consequently the fuel and power plant requirements.

Incidentally I don't actually even remember seeing a propulsion system on the Banshees in the OVA, which is scary considering in all continuities it's on record as being nuclear powered.
>>
>>14217713
There were even proposals in the '80's to power it with lasers from a number of solar power satellites in geosynchronous orbit. No nuclear reactors, jet fuel was to be used for take-offs, landings & refueling its onboard complement only.
>>
>>14221089
Because there's literally a treaty banning the development and deployment of space-based weapons platforms. The ISS would not exist if all the countries in the world were focused on building weapons to take each other's ground-based military units out, rather than cooperating and advancing the interests of all mankind.

Plus, do you have any idea how much thrust and how many years it took to put even the ISS out in space? Putting any object into orbit is a time-consuming and expensive expenditure, much more so for heavy military hardware that you also have to design to be able to re-enter the atmosphere.
>>
>>14221910
The Soviets put a 23mm cannon up into orbit, and they still dicked around with scientific space stations.

Well, if you were going to build an airborne aircraft carrier, that's how you'd do it. I mean, it's like 90 percent lift surface.

Still not a good idea unless Fairy has both a thicker atmosphere and less gravity than Earth or there have been some MAJOR improvements in material science since the JAM invasion. Like, aircraft being light enough to lift by hand kind of materials.

Supposedly the reactors were meant to remain intact even if they flew into a mountain. Even if they didn't though radioative debris would be localized to the crash site. You'd just have to take a few truckloads of dirt from the crash site.

>>14228399
If you want fallout over enemy territory your best bet is SLAM. Good Old project pluto. Mach 4 on the deck means the shockwave will fuck shit up. The radioactive exhaust is just a bonus. And that's before it shits out a dozen nukes. Few things are better at killing commies than the flying crowbar.
>>
>>14239167
A computer probably ran the numbers and proved that it could be done.

For a so-called "miracle of modern technology made real" it'd make sense that it came to be because something took the very un-human approach and seriously considered an otherwise utterly insane idea that had zero precedent at the time.
>>
>>14238683
Probably on Earth somewhere
>>
>>14239958
There is some precedent with zeppelins and flying wings but it's still pretty insane.

Yeah but a fullblown aircraft carrier that flies and not just a dirigible with planes mounted on it, that's the sort of crazy people would be inclined to dismiss on impulse.

A human being would sooner suggest something akin to the Flip Knight system, complete with control plane that carries them into battle.

Oh incidentally I just remembered there's a section about Banshee in FAFAW.

Don't ask me how canon it is, though.

Don't ask me if there's any better scans of FAFAW either.

Who needs congress anymore when you got a phone and a pen. Also, the supreme court decides most issues these days and it is the president who nominates candidates to fulfill vacancies there are a possible of 5 seats which could get replaced. Correction : 99% of FICTIONAL mech are not feasible.
100% of the mechs concept we are already working on are largely feasible, and many of them will eventually exceed our expectation.

You just have to stop living in your own little fictional world and face reality.
