What's the point of "armored" pilot uniforms?
Isn't the whole point of placing a pilot within the mech is so that he or she isn't exposed to enemy fire?
>>14206214
Debris and shrapnel
Stella from GSD got pretty fucked up even with her pilot suit on.
>>14206214
Sometimes things don't go to plan.
Also you might have to get out of the mecha for some reason at some point.
>>14206214
The same reason tankers wear the same body armor as the infantry. Sometimes you gotta get outside the armor box when the enemy is still shooting.
>>14206214
If you get hit with a high explosive or armour piercing round, you're probably going to have shrapnel flying around your cockpit. If you survive that you're probably going to have to bail out
>>14206362
>>14206362
But then why don't fighter pilots?
>>14206363
They used to wear Flak jackets back in the day, but modern fighter pilots don't, because if they get shot down, they're either going to eject and be OKish, or dead.
>>14206363
If shrapnel is penetrating the cockpit it's already too late and you should have pulled the ejection handle 5 seconds ago.
And for a pilot that has ejected, there are only three options:
1)Eject over water, where body armor will only drown you
2)Eject over friendly territory where body armor is useless
3)Eject over enemy territory where all tje body armor in the world won't help and your best bet is to run towards friendlies as fast as possible, which body armor will only hinder
>>14206214
Spalling is a bitch.
Bernie and Chris both ate a ton of shit due to spalling when they dueled, and like >>14206317 said, Stella got righteously fucked up by spalling
>>14206363
Because they've gone even further beyond the need for body protection.
The speeds and places where they fight mean that if there's a shrapnel situation, and they're not already outside the cockpit, they're fucked.
>>14206214
I'd assume the extra protection helps keep the pilot from getting beat up by their own machine's movement, whether it's from a sudden change in running/thruster direction or getting pummeled and thrown into stuff by another pilot's machine.
>>14206363
To elaborate on what the others said, WW2 bomber aircrew wore body armor to protect against shrapnel from German flak -- hence 'flak jacket.' They usually had those snap-on buttons that were easy to take off if the crew had to bail out.
Fighter pilots, not so much, since it was usually very cramped in the cockpit, it can get really hot in the Pacific theatre and their seats & parts of the cockpit were armored to begin with.
Also, modern fighter pilots are already wearing so much assorted gear & survival doodads on top of their g-suit that there's no room for body armor.
Helicopter pilots during the Vietnam War had lots of body armor to choose from.
>>14206214
I bet Carta would love one of these.
Remember how in Gundam 0079 how Amuro always shook when the Gundam was hit even with the restraints on? Thats why.
>>14206363
Not much in the terms of just body armor is going to protect you from 20mm cannon fire, or the warhead of a SAM hitting the cockpit.
>>14206363
Fighter Pilots are way too cool for armor.
Like, imagine the coolest person you know. A fight pilot is 10 times as cool as him, at minimum. At that level of coolness, you no longer need armor.

>>14206746
Exactly what this anon said. Why do you think they had to make planes that wouldn't freeze up from having a pilot that was too cool.
>>14206214
Because it's a part of the mocap system
>>14206214
They're powered suitss to help them run away from BETA
>>14207279
ML fortified suits don't boost speed, but they do (despite their looks) increase survivability by hardening upon strikes and having built in medical functions.
Either way, I'm not sure I'd call this an armored look, would you?
>>14206496
Emma was flat out killed by shrapnel. She probably could have made it with some immediate attention if she had better armor on
>>14207303
>be Gallian
>get shot
>>14207303
God damn it, man...
>>14207299
It looks more armoured than some pilot suit designs.
>>14207303
>>14207305
>>14207311
Eh. It was a sniper, no amount of body armour would have helped.
>>14207325
She was shot center-mass, a place plate-carriers are DESIGNED to cover. Had she been wearing one, she'd have live with no wound besides having the air knocked out of her.
>>14207325
Nigga what, she got shot in the torso, and modern day SAPI plates are rated for 3 shots from 7.62x51mm NATO M80 ball.
Enough body armor would definitely ahve saved her.
That and properly sweeping the fucking town before relaxing.
>>14207337
>modern day SAPI plates
>Fantasy WWII
>>14207339
>no amount of body armor would have helped
>>14207339
Fair enough, but that's a different argument than "no amount of body armour would have helped"
>>14207337
>modern day
And this is 1930s fake WWII, where the concept of body armor hasn't advanced beyond platemail and shields for specific classes.
>>14207336
>She was shot center-mass,
Im surprised they didn't go for the head shot
>>14207340
>>14207341
My point was that at that tech level, body armour could never prevent a full size rifle round from penetrating. It's one reason why they didn't give it to infantry, since they all had rifles back then.
It's like putting on 2 condoms. You know, just in case.
No wait, that's to make sex pleasureless to punish supermodels.
Is a breastplate and pauldrons enough for the design to be considered armored?
>>14207346
If the armor sucks then the rifle sucks too
>>14207345
Military and Law Enforcement train to shoot center mass.
>>14207350
Of course, pauldrons are the most important part of armor
>>14207355
Dear lord am I glad that the GW of the 2000's is dead...
>>14207351
Not really. Ballistic weaponry has always outpaced armour
>>14207344
>>14207346
Actually, the German sappenpanzer breastplate from WW1 could stop a .303 Enfield.
Unfortunately, it weighed more than 20 pounds, was quite bulky, and wasn't effective at less than 500 yards.
>>14207345
It's realistic. People don't go for headshots IRL, you always shoot for the body.
There's also the fact that a headshot would look incredibly gruesome and make the scene look like gorn as opposed to drama they were going with.
>>14207532
A chest wound can also be incredibly gorey as well. Don't believe the anime, when you've got a chest/lung wound, you do NOT die easy. Your punctured lung's outer layers starts to fill with air, which makes it harder to breath with rach breath. Unless you let that air out, which most no one outside of doctors knows how to do, the person will start to suffocate, flopping like a fish out of water, their final words nothing more than bloody gurggles
>>14207350
No, but some of the UC designs I'd call armored
>>14207302
Or you know
Padding
Or any safety measures whatsoever
>>14207345
Headshots are hard and center mass shots kill just fine.
besides oxygen supply and radio communications, dont some pilot suits also help with G force shock
like tight leggings that help excessive blood flow away from the brain and such
>>14210865
mecha settings rarely mention G Force management, besides shows such as Macross where they're hand-waved away by bullshit.
>>14211098
*overtechnology
>>14211098
g force is pretty common in tbe gundam franchise
>>14211413
And Getter
>>14207350
The breastplate is probably the most important part next to the helmet so just a breastplate would be enough.
The "pauldrons" are more of a convienience.
arent fighters VF and F90 gen cockpits tiny, to the point where armor would be a nuisance?
i know nu gundam towers in at 22m, but the F90 gen suits are a tiny 14m to 16m range
makes me think about ground infantry commonly fight tank sized mechs ie votoms garasaki and such
>>14211642
The ex-armor becomes part of the seat and when you eject it goes back to being a power armor on the VFs
>>14207543
Unless you do that funky impromptu valve shit like in Three Kings
>>14207299
this shit sucks
>>14207305
>be a Galian woman
>get shot
ftfy
>>14212643

>True Gallian
Nope

Y'know technically Gallia started as entirely Darcsen, so...
