What are some eastern spaceships that don't meet any of the following criteria?

>arbitrarily placed armor with exposed internals
>literally a boat with spaceship engines
>turrets that only turn horizontally
>two-pronged front end
>head and/or face
>huge glass canopy bridge
>open bridge
>superfluous panel lines
>rehash/homage/ripoff to western design (e.g. Star Wars, Star Trek, generic 70s rocket ships)
>humongous hull with tiny wings

You want spaceships with wings?

Come to think of it, almost all of the Banpresto Original battleships fit those criteria. The only ones that don't are Shirogane/Hagane (two-pronged bow, though not of the type OP was obviously referring to), Valstork (head/face), and arguably Air Christmas (depending on where you draw the line for what constitutes a huge glass canopy bridge).

What the fuck is the point of a 'realistic' ship anyway? The ones western fetishists fellate have to resort to ungodly greeble to appear in any way visually interesting.

>superfluous panel lines
This one always gets me. Western ship designers literally cannot survive without greebling shit to hell and back, and at the same time, you can't expect me to look at a perfectly smooth and flat 20mx30m surface and go 'that is reasonable'.

I'll never understand the appeal of steel cigar tubes.

A realistic starship design is good if you're doing a hard scifi story.
The VentureStar from Avatar is a good example of a reasonably well designed "realistic" starship.

It's a parody of a thread with JFK as the OP pic and a similar list of criteria except targetting Western mecha.

Though this actually prompted some decent discussion in comparison.
>>
>>14176968
So what this thread shows us, is that there are a bunch of Japanese exceptions that prove the general rule: Western space ship design is generally superior. After all, these examples are all heavily inspired by western designs.

>>14178256
It's the futuristic appeal. A smooth and shiny world shows man's absolute mastery over matter brought by the advance of technology, while panels, nuts and bolts give off a "factory line"-esque, rough and gritty feel, or are reminiscent of tanks. Either way, one represents the ascension of mankind to a new stage (or Apple taking over the world I guess) while the other is more down-to-earth.

>It's the futuristic appeal
Yes. But you've completely misunderstood how it works. During its relatively short history modern science fiction has based it's style on whatever happens to be considered the height of technology in any given period.

During the 50s high-altitude heavy bombers and submarines provided the aesthetic for spacecraft. After all, they can keep the crew alive in the hostile environments of the deep ocean or stratosphere, so they clearly would be the basis for spacecraft. Right?

Jump ahead to the 80s and the emergence of automated production lines, labyrinthine chemical plants and the rise of the home computer resulted in the utilitarian sci-fi of the time. After all, this is what cutting-edge technology looks like at the moment, so it must what things look like when we eventually conquer the stars. Right?

More recently we have had the 'Apple' future of style-over-substance (probably has a rebuttal of the utilitarian 80s.) Naturally we want imagine we are all techno-gods with our over-priced and obnoxious shiny toys and infantilising, sterile minimalism. While all the other fads faded away, this one will still be popular centuries from now. Right?

Of course the white-plastic 'Apple' future has already become cheesy and passé. So I'm not entirely sure what will supplant it, but it clearly will involve holographic interfaces.... sadly.

If anything, that would be the designs of the 30s - 50s where everything had an extremely industrial aesthetic because it was new and fresh coming out of the 19th century.

Of course. The 'West' is such a huge collection of people, sensibilities and history that it would be impossible to not produce something memorable (which is why I hate the idea of the 'west.')

Some examples off the top of my head:

>Babylon 5
Mostly everything. The Omega is just an Alexi Leonov ripoff but that still is a good example of utilitarian done right. Speaking of which...

>2001/2010
Just about every vessel in both films.

>Red Dwarf
The titular ship is a greebly slab, granted, but it has a distinctive silhouette and best of all it's not grey. plus the Starbugs are silly and adorable.

>Battlefleet Gothic
Glorious, vast, battleship-cathedrals.

>Blake's Seven
I'm rather partial to the Liberator.

>Alien(s)
Nostromo, Narcissus, Sulaco, Dropship. The 80s at their finest IMHO.

>The Last Starfighter
The Gunstar.

>Freespace Series
The first more than the sequel. The Shivans especially.

>Homeworld
As already mentioned. In the realm of game-exclusive designs I'd consider these the apex. Worth mentioning artist Peter Elson, who provided inspiration for the game style and a lot of his works would definitely count.

>Killzone
Spacecraft play a small role but are nice. ISA cruisers are more well-done utilitarians with a distinctive shape and the fact their decks are perpendicular to their main engines may please hard scifi fans. The Helghast vessels are more traditional in form and more characterful.

>Halo
Covenant ships are nice, human examples unremarkable but competently crafted. Notable exception is the Sabre from Reach which is very nice in both form and function.

>Sins of a Solar Empire
The default game is ok but probably wouldn't have been mentioned here. However the latest expansion included some outstanding examples, especially the new super-sized units (pic related.) If fact they make the older units look quite bad by comparison.

it doesn't use chemical rockets though you retard, it uses a photon sail in conjunction with antimatter-matter elimination engines, that is partially why they need unobtanium, because they use it to cool the super hot magnetic field generators which contain the antimatter.

>Babylon 5

Shit tons of designs fall foul of OP's critiques from that show. One decent fighter design does not it all make, especially when anime was pumping shit out in the 70s with the same principles.

>2001/2010

The whole point of those films designs were to be realistic; Moonlit Mile, Planetes hit your points on the same level.

>Red Dwarf

It's a great design, but I can point to at least eight different shows with similar designs in them from anime. And don't forget, it was literally knocked up by a BBC crew in a matter of days.

>Battlefleet Gothic

Falls afoul of OP's points.

>Blake's Seven

Falls afoul of OP's points. Also see Red Dwarf

>Aliens

Again, great designs, but I can post to similar stuff coming out of Japan in the same period.

>The Last Starfighter.

As above.

>Freespace

As above.

>Homeworld

As above. Chris Foss had massive influence in America and in Japan and anime designs from the 80s also had a huge influence on Homeworld's aesthetiv.

>Killzone

Again, I can point to designs from Japanese shows.

>Halo

As above.

>SoaSE

As above.

Also shit tons of the above fall into the same problems that OP described.

I believed it was written by OP and that judging by those conditions, his choices were quite frankly wrong. You can't ignore the context in which something is posted, such as entering a thread where Japanese designs are being judged by certain standards, then posting a list of ships. The expectation is that those ships will comply with the standards set, your point being to show where good design was.

Next time, be a bit more careful about acting smug. Otherwise you show yourself up as an idiot.
