I really want to get into some Mecha series, I've only seen a few
>Neon Genesis
>TTGL
>Gundam 00

Which would you recommend for a pleb such as myself?
>>
Anything you think look cool.
If you don't have any idea, wander in the catalog or go on any anime website and use the mecha tag.

If you still don't know go watch Giant Robo.

Also this.
Lurking is a great way to find new material.

Legend of Blue Wolves is a pretty good entry-level show. If you want to get into Gundam, I'd recommend Gundam' Char's Counterattack, Gundam SEED Destiny or if you want movies, Zeta: A New Translation (the definitive version). Muv Luv: Total Eclipse is good if you like higher-budget new anime like 00. Valvrave is probably the top mecha show in the past 20 years (or even of all time) but I wouldn't recommend watching the best thing first. If someone tells you otherwise they're trolling, we have lots of trolls on the board so don't listen.
>>
>>14173828
The three Getter Robo OVAs are all great, especially if you liked TTGL.

Check the webm thread for snippets of different shows.

>The rest of Gundam, lel
>Code Geass
>Full Metal Panic

>All three

>Dai Guard

Hell, watch Dai Guard anyway. It's that good.

Not OP, but I just started watching this last month. I'm making slow progress but I'm on episode 17 and VOTOMS IS FUCKING COOL DUDE!

The first arc delivered on cityfighting and now the second arc is giving me vietnam-esque mecha. Goddamn I'm so into it.

Aldnoah.Zero's pretty damn new, but no one here mentioned it yet so I will. I'll even go as far as to give it my personal recommendation. I fucking finished it not too long ago today and I fucking love it! I hope they have a 3rd season, even the the main plot got resolved. They could always put the focus of the show on Slaine or Lemrina's unresolved issues and make that the a follow up plot for like 2 more seasons. It would pave the way for more awesome mech fights. Honestly there's quite a bit they could do to continue it.
>>
One more case I'd like to make for you on Aldnoah.Zero is that not only do the Martian kataphrakts (*it's what everyone in that show calls their mechs*) have unique abilities. The Earth ones are quite average joe kataphrakts, but on in particular gets tricked out pretty good as the series goes on. One more thing, and I know it may not be important, but the Versian (*martians*) military has some awesome fucking uniforms and a qt princess

Give Dougram a go when you're done. It's longer, but VOTOMs acts as its spiritual sequel.

TV - OVA 2

are good entry level stuff.

Zambot 3 if you want to see 70's Evangelion.

As for new stuff, Gasaraki and Bokurano are crazy rides. Sidonia is ongoing, but the manga is done.

Ignore these guys.

Except Overman King Gainer and G Reco are great.

What's wrong with Buddy Complex?
>>
Fafner is the closest mecha has to offer as an art. The otherworldly styling of both the characters and the Fafners seem to be something that the mechanical designers and character designers of today seem to avoid entirely.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is just a case of Fafner being something of a pinnacle in both Japanese art and story telling. The themes of post-humanism as well as strength through suffering seem so common and reoccurrent that I can't help but see it as a, not only a classic piece of mecha history, but as a piece of art to the world.

Why is it that NOTHING has come close to matching the quality of Fafner's visuals and story telling? Is the mediocrity of today's artist because of their blatant lack of skill, or is Tow Ubukata just among the greatest storytellers of the world?

>>Gunbuster
It is by the same studio that did Eva and TTGL and is one of their best works. Pic related.

>>Mobile Suit Gundam
The original series. It really informs the rest of the Gundam metaseries and is very good on its own.

>>Super Dimensional Fortress: Macross
Another classic series that is pretty whimsical at times.
>>
>>14174984
This is my favorite copypasta.

Have a better version:
Is Gundam Reconguista in G the closest mecha has to offer as an art? The avant garde styling of both the characters and the G-Type mobile suits seems to be something that the mechanical designers and character designers of today seem to avoid entirely.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is just a case of G-Reco being something of a pinnacle in both Japanese art and Japanese story telling. The themes of Su-cordism as well as strength through unity seem so common and reoccurrent that I can't help but see it as a, not only a classic piece of mecha history, but as a piece of art to the world.

Why is it that NOTHING has come close to matching the quality of G-Reco's art and story telling? Is the mediocrity of today's Japanese artist because of their blatant lack of skill, or is Tomino just among the greatest storytellers of the world?

I'm somewhat impartial, but the CGI is trashy and it drags the whole thing down.

1) Code Geass

2) Macross DYRL

3) Macross Delta

4) Gundam Reconguista in G

5) Idolmaster Xenoglossia

6) Gundam Wing

7) Sidonia

8) Macross Frontier

9) Symphogear

10) Cross Ange

Ignore the gundam shitters and stick to other good stuff from the 70s and 80s, like Cutey Honey, Megazone 23, Space Adventure Cobra, GE999, Bubblegum Crisis, Shinzo Ningen Casshan, Robot Carnival, SDF Macross, VOTOMS, Wings of Honneamise, and Dream Hunter Rem

G gundam and Gundam 08th ms team.

Ignore Zeta, its awful garbage. ZZ is alright though.

Part of me wants to call you a nostalgiafag but Robot Carnival is GOAT so at least you have taste.
>>14173828
As the above implies, watch Robot Carnival. If you see it in English one of the shorts is ruined by shitty dubbing, but the rest is solid gold should be available for free on Youtube, if you don't mind shit quality.

You've seen Eva and TTGL, so complete the Gainax Trinity and watch Gunbuster. It starts slow, but the second half is totally worth it.

If you liked TTGL watch Diebuster after Gunbuster, it's technically a sequel (only one or two things are really related, however) and it sort of laid the foundation for the levels of cuh-ray-zee Gurren Lagann would hit.

Also, Megas XLR is widely regarded to be fucking incredible.
>>
>>14179277
It had three kingdoms in the sky, one with wizard-princesses, the other with ancient samurai-style warriors, the third was bandits/pirates. Mazknkaiser team was sent into the area to stop it from crashing down into earth IIRC.

I thought the princesses and the three kingdoms idea qualified it for fantasy, but I may be wrong.
>>
>>14179277
Reminds me of that one anon who thought LoDM was fantasy.

You mean oldfag, since I find it doubtful that he was alive to experience all those things when he was younger, especially given his filename.

Anyways, pic related Break Blade.

I watched the movies years ago and it was pretty fucking good, looked awesome too, haven't read the manga because reasons but if you get hooked with the movies you might enjoy it since it should be way better.

Movies or tv?

Didn't Girghe get put in the Movie bds?

I don't think ideon's a good show to watch if you're not used to super robots

I'd rather he watch Bryger first and if he likes the super robot fight bits he can proceed to Ideon easily

I watched the movies and Girge's there, I know there's a TV version but no idea if it's a sequel or just a retelling. Recommending the movies because I know they look good and at least hooked me.
Actually think I might go read the manga now.
