If you are going to bring up what Godzilla is "supposed" to look like, then you can't argue against the fact that everything that isn't Showa era is dismissed as a knockoff riding in the coattails of the original vision of design.
Personally, I don't agree with that logic. I feel that artists should take their own liberties on a fictional character or piece of work. When multiple artists offer their own takes on the subject, you'll end up with different iterations of the same subject which means that some will resonate with the individual more than the others. Basically, I believe they are all "Godzilla," but '14 looks meh and '16 looks worse.

However, if you are talking about franchises, you are insinuating business and profitability. That's a whole other thing. There's obviously a committee of people who are going to make sure Godzilla doesn't have tentacles or wings. A strong franchise wth a long history will always rebound. And I wouldn't be too worried about taking the franchise in bad directions. Godzilla has been rebooted several times already with a few flops along the way.

This Godzilla is seriously damaged and absurdly pissed off. Its arms are burnt almost to the bone, it has exposed glowing tears in its flesh, there is scarring all over the body.
However, the execution of the idea has a lot of flaws. The head has a jaw that is way too big, with a gap and more teeth where a jawbone should be. Both arms are debilitated too far, making the monster look frail. The end of the tail is just chopped off for some reason. ...and so on.

I'm really hoping the theory that this Godzilla is slowing regenerating from the Oxygen Destroyer.
As much as it's a novel concept, I don't think I can handle an entire movie with this design otherwise. It's wobbling on the fine line between unsettling and goofy.
So I'm not the only one expecting the "big twist" to be part of Godzilla's tail to be a separate organism making him all super evil. Then it gets broken off, grows into a full monster for him to fight and "save tokyo".

I was actually toying with a similar idea, the bones at the end of the tail developing into a new creature or the like. At any rate, in the trailer, it is already more lively than the body itself.
