The ridiculous Eva shit gets toned down after the first death (it's been some time, forgot the episode number) and it becomes fully original by the second half of the first series.
The first series is still pretty boring though, it doesn't really get good until the last few episodes.
The prequel and movie are good and the sequel from last year is fantastic.
