I remember some anon saying the OVA was based on a manga, but I can't find any information on it. In fact I searched for it in japanese and couldn't find anything on it either. So does anyone have confirmation of whether it exists or not?
>>
Yeah, iirc there's a bunch of short stories about Shaian?

People've posted pics here a couple times but I'm afraid I lost 'em with my last computer. Not really sure there's proper scans.

I've been a huge fan of this little short and Makoto Kobayashi's style since I stumbled upon it one board night browsing Youtube back in high school. We should see if we can find those lost manga scans.

Outside of /m/, Dragon's Heaven is pretty obscure. A One-shot anime with no merchandise tie-ins? Stuff like that gets buried by newer anime with more episodes and more merchandise.

I actually made an x264 MKV of the DVD two weeks ago, but I don't really know anything about filtering so there are these combing artifacts everywhere. I didn't think it was fit for release. I'm trying to figure out how to use Vapoursynth but I'm not doing so well.
>>
>>14178989
I also made a x264 mkv from the DVD raw, but I too know very little about filtering or encoding, so I had similar concerns. I fixed the subs a bit as well though, so I might upload it anyway, if anyone is interested.
>>
>>14179037
I think the actual encody-bits I did fine, it just looks bad due to the source. Also not sure how to handle the live-action bits, because I'm pretty sure they were filmed on tape, but I'm not too sure if they were or how I would handle it if they were.

There might be a release by Iznjie-Biznjie (ex Anime-FanRips).
>>
>>14179161

What program do you use to stitch together the DVD vob files. I've been encoding them seperate with handbrake, but i'm really inexperienced.

Also, i've been punching

–profile high10 –preset slower –tune film –crf 17 –b-adapt 1 –bframes 16 –merange 24 –trellis 1 –input-depth 16

into handbrake with slower deinterlace, but i don't know if those do anything, or if they relate to ffmpeg or avisynth.
>>
>>14180826
>Iznjie-Biznjie
That'd take too long. It'd be best for Orphan Fansubs to do something about it. I bet they'd even sub the making-of segment, as well.
>>
>>14180344
Well, that was unexpected.
>>
>>14179161
I also cleaned the subs at one point, i could provide my personal edit. The biggest changes were a few grammatical errors are fixed and there was a puzzling use of the phrase "battle robots" instead of the audible "Gampf"
>>
>>14181034
That will suck. Only the live action elements need deinterlacing, the rest needs IVTC, else you will fuck up the nice remastered footage.

For vob files processing, I would suggest the traditional way, which is DGindex, then dgdecode in avisynth.

>>14181073
Looks it might get TLC, subbing the making off is probably too much to ask for.

>>14181034
I used handbrake too but honestly it was my first time encoding anything so I didn't mess around with it too much, it was more of just a test which is why it looks like ass. Not a good release, but something temporary at least until someone who knows what they're doing can make a release

>>14181106
I didn't make that many changes either, mostly grammar and rewording some of the more awkward sentences. I used 'Gampe' instead of 'Gampf' though since there seems to be a (slight) difference between the designs in the manga and the OVA. I'd be interested in seeing your changes though.

I might work on a v2 of the subs at some point to try and improve it but without a translation check I'm not confident how far to take the editing; it'd probably be better to leave it to someone else.
>>
>>14182542
Yeah it'd be nice to get a translation check but whoever did the initial translation didn't do a horrible job, and all of my changes were grammatical, i did tweak a few of SHAIAN's lines (I'll probably want to get your opinion on the changes, i think we can fuse our sub tracks into one track) to use somewhat more "formal" phrasing, minor things like "I am" instead of "I'm".
>>
>>14180344
I never quite understood what exactly the revelation here was, like, what is she?

Nah, I can see the appeal, although I prefer the DVD version. I feel like it does fit the idea of a post-apocalyptic civilisation that's come back into the semblance of normality, with old tech still kicking around; washed out, bleached by the sun, etc.
>>
>>14178989
I'm not entirely on the up and up about this but usually anime is at 23.976 frames per second, and this release is at 30, so maybe there's some way you can de-telecine it?
>>
>>14168133
I can see the color has been adjusted digitally. The original negative wasn't as faded as the LD but still subtler than the DVD.
Seems like they dialed up the contrast and DVNR'd that shit to bits
>>
>>14185771
This is not artificially increased contrast, look at how the cloud isn't completely bright white with killed detail. It has a fairly natural look and it is not completely denoised either, although it doesn't have strong 16mm grain. Also no extra sharpening on the edges, I would be so glad if every remaster looked at least like this (although it has some rather starved frames here and there).

You don't know how did the negative look (well, aside from it being negative of course hehe), laserdisc's look isn't the golden standard for how is the thing supposed to look, when you get to look at cels, they are always much more colorful than older DVDs or laserdisc transfers.
>>
So do I do the DVD or the LD?
>>
>>14185799

dvd you dumb nigger

LD are always shit transfers. VHS usually look better. I haven't seen a single LD that I liked.
>>
>>14185799
The DVD, the LD version (are we even 100 percent sure it was ripped from an LD? It looks like it could easily have been VHS) is horribly interlaced, low resolution, and bleached the fuck out. Not to mention the fact that it was a composite transfer to the disc/tape, transferred through composite again to the ripper's pc probably.
>>
>>14185914
>is horribly interlaced, low resolution, and bleached the fuck out.

Welcome to Laser Disk rips. They're all like this.

>Not to mention the fact that it was a composite transfer to the disc/tape, transferred through composite again to the ripper's pc probably.

oh, that might explain it. So does this mean that we could get MUCH clearer rips if we just did new rips with better equipment? Perhaps even modified equipment?
>>
>>14185919
Enjoy getting a professional composite capture card and special software to digitize the signal without any compression.
Before encoding the file is gonna be really big (bitrate of 60MB/s). So better prepare a really beefy drive array.
>>
>>14185919
Here's the unfortunate bit.
All laserdiscs were recorded via Composite video, and all laserdisc players use composite output. The exceptions are a selection of S-video models, however those use hardware comb filters to reduce the crosstalk from the composite process, and they seperate the chrominace and luminace from the already mixed tranfers. No matter what, the video is interlaced as both s video and composite are interlaced signal formats, and they were recorded to the disc from some sort of tape, which was also interlaced.
A better encode, good filter chains, and tlc can make a rip like this better (see EGs work on G Gundam, which doesn't have line/comb/dot crawl artifacts), but in the end, it's thoroughly pointless, whenever the DVD is much more straightforward, clearer, and more accurate in color timing.
>>
>>14185969
>but in the end, it's thoroughly pointless, whenever the DVD is much more straightforward, clearer, and more accurate in color timing.

...and a lot of these old obscure ova never got DVD releases, only LD.

>>14159782

>>
>>14185919
The very signal on LDs are composite video, that little yellow RCA jacks that have always sucked ass compared to everything other than RF modulated signals. Unless you have some kinda miracle tech it's not gonna look better than the DVDs

You might as well re-grade the DVDs to have coloring more like the LaserDisc, like how people have been retiming the colors in Star Wars for ages now.
>>
>>14186062

I have pea brain so I ask stupid question. Sorry.
>>
>>14186063

People mod gaming consoles to have output other than composite. Could the same be done for LD?
>>
>>14186071
The problem here is that composite is what is coming out of the disc and reading head itself, you can't get anything else if that is what is stored on the rainbow disc. Think of it as a mono vinyl record on a stereo player - it can still only play mono.
>>
>>14186071
You can get s video out on most of them at least.
>>
>>14186071
Problem is that the Laserdisc doesn't generate a video, it's a recording and the recorded signal on there is a composite signal, stamped into the disc. With consoles you can tap into the graphics chips and pull out an RGB or digital signal and use that before it's modulated into composite video, but with a Laserdisc even the best player is still not gonna eliminate the bad colors, dotcrawls, rainbows, and whatnot. Laserdiscs are analog video, so the signal has already been reduced to a composite NTSC signal.
>>14186091
Absolutely, blatantly untrue.
>>
>>14186070
Sorry, I didn't mean it as a jab.
>>
>>14185985
Yes, you COULD greatly improve the rips, they wouldn't be DVD level, but they'd be somewhere between the quality of early DVD quality and "Robotech" quality (referring to the use of old worn
out broadcast tapes, anyone who's seen the Robotech or adv Macross dvds knows what I'm referring to)

You don't need any background knowledge to get into it though, the whole things just a big show case of Kobayashi weirder designs. I watched un-subbed a few times and still enjoyed it, the visuals are that great.

Try starting a thread on /a/ and dumping a few pages to attract editor/typesetter etc. Usually, once translations are done, the process gets easier that way.
