Okawara's designs has that 80's mech vibe to it, so when his new designs get animated, it feels rather sluggish.
My theory is that his mech curves might have a side effect of animators not reproducing the curve correctly in the next frames resulting in that sluggish animation.
However if the design has angular features i.e Katoki's , it's easier to produce the next frames since straight lines and angular features being displaced is simpler than redrawing a curved feature at a different location.
Just a theory though. Or it's just that our modern tastes are angular rather than curved. Just like the current gen of fighter jets vs old gens of fighters I suppose

Feddies for sure but Zeek uniforms can look pretty damn good. I just like how simple but practical the Federation's is. Zeon depends on who is wearing it, but usually works and looks pretty regal but intimidating in its mix of combat uniform and dress uniform.
The real question: Would it have helped if they used the manufacturing for the over-the-top uniforms for other purposes? Or did the morale factor of the kickass design offset the cost? If either, by how much?
