Apparently one of the first things we did with alien technology was to make everything hover.

>>
>>14146139
That's fire.

You'll notice the bow and underside of the giant alien ship is also bright orange, because it's coming into the atmosphere so fast. Not only that, but because it's so fucking massive, there's nowhere for the air to go but to get compressed and heat up. So the air under the ship (near to it, at least) is being superheated, which is igniting all of the materials being pulled up by its gravity. Then they're falling back down on fire. Also the sky is on fire.

What you should be asking is why the cities under the ship aren't getting blown the fuck away by pressure waves instead. the answer is it'd only look cool for all of two seconds before everyone down there is dead whereas running through multiple cities of falling landmarks is cool for minutes

People actually like this terrible movie? It was bad even in the 90s.
>>
>>14146576
Only thing I was most miffed by in the first one was the exclusive use of Hornets instead of mixing it up and giving us Viper love too.
>>
>>14146655
Falcons will never be famous like Tomcats, Eagles or Hornets. It is the GM of the US jets
>>
>>14146576
Nobody ever pretended that it was a masterpiece even then. But even the most stoic of men cannot deny the awesomeness that is alien invasions, high-tech fighter planes and stuff blowing up.

Why do you think people still watch Gundam?
>>
>>14146655

i had the biggest tomcat boner as a kid and hated the hornet. only saw a squadron of 14s for a few minutes. i get that the whole two seater thing may have been an issue plot wise, but jimmie could've been steve's navigator i guess.

also as a kid, as mich as i loved jets, i thought it was weird that the air force got first crack at the city-ships rather than any g2a missile units/shelling from ships or ground. seems like the a2a missiles just wouldn't pack the same punch.
>>
>>14146692
someone has never watched Iron Eagle
>>
>>14146709

best part of that movie was the use of steve winwood. i know topgun had editing issues in regard to what the fighers were doing in certain shots, but iron eagle would straight up switch falcons with different paint jobs between shots like no one would notice.

>>
>>14146159
The explanation is literally "they didn't say he died, so he didn't die".

The first film originally had a line that said he was dead, but they cut it. That's the only reason he's in this movie.
>>
>>14146159
>choke a guy for a few seconds
>he falls to the floor
>check his pulse
>shake your head
He MUST be dead.

He's even wearing a scarf now to cover up his hideous neck scars from being throttled by alien tentacles.
>>
Didn't Goldblum's character watch SDF Macross?

The first thing they should have done after the first alien war, was to build colony ships and spread humanity all over the galaxy.

It's Rocky 4 with aliens.

Eagles and Tomcats would have been nice too. IMO, Vipers were just as famous as Hornets in the public eye.
>>
>>14147298
>Fuck that garbage mindset.

I adore ID4, but lets get serious here. Negotiating computer virus with alien tech ? It's one of the worst cop outs I've ever seen. The writers must have been out of ideas as to how to end the film. It's a silly film, but in its silliness stands its epicness.
>>
>>14147325
There were Tomcats and Harriers in the background in a few scenes.

The reason for the Naval/Marine planes is probably because they took out the air bases on land. There was a scene where they attacked an air base, and you can clearly see some F-16s on the ground.

>>
>>14147298
To be fair, I don't think ID4 is "so bad it's good". Too many people use that phrase since on the internet the rating scale only has a 1 and a 10, with no numbers in-between. (Plus people love using "so bad it's good" as a kafka trap to keep being from defending the shows they like.

If anything it ID4 is more camp, or "popcorn flick" than it is a horrible, horrible film that people watch for unintentional comedy. It's not high art, it doesn't make you think, and it's not complicated. But it isn't trying to be any of those things, it would seem silly to judge it by those standards. It's a very simplistic story about "AMERICA FUCK YEAH!" defeating aliens.

I think it's better to grade the flim for what it's trying to do. Did people boo the aliens when they blew up shit? Did they cheer when the aliens got blown up? Did they laugh at the cheesy one liners?

People watch cheesy campy shit like the first season of Power Rangers, or Adam West Batman and like it for what it is. Not that they think it's a bad show that's so horrendous, they like it.

I can understand why people think ID4 is a bad show, but I can understand why people legitimately enjoy it.
>>
>>14147412
I thought we were talking aesthetics, hence the not undeserving of prestige. I had hoped I wouldn't garner that reply or those like your, but I should've been more clear.
>>14147418

Aesthetics wise I think it holds up damn well to the Tomcat.
Sure it might not have sexy swingwings, but those dynamic airflow scoops are pretty cool.
>>
>>14147446
That's not how it works. If the plane was shot down, it's a kill. It doesn't matter if the pilots eject.

Over a hundred F-15s were lost in collisions, accidents, and due to mechanical failure. Many of those pilots didn't survive.
>>
>>14147399

Not only do Harmony Gold and Sony NOT have any real copyright on transforming planes (anything Transformers), Sony doesn't have any real leg to stand on anyway; Absolutely nothing is being done on the proposed Robotech movie except that everyone's waiting on some no-name bum to finish a script.

That's what happens when you buy distribution rights to a near-death franchise that's filled with copyright quicksand in some mad grab of starting your own franchise, only to find out that the company you bought it from has no script or real plans of making any movie. Not to mention that their hired producer is someone you fired and disowned years ago because he costed you millions over a cinematic clusterfuck that was supposed to be your company's grand entrance into the cinematic business.

The planned director, james Wan, has already moved on and is signing deals to do real green-lit projects. Meanwhile, Sony themselves are too busy reeling from the loss of their Spiderman Marvel universe, dealing with damage control on Ghostbusters, and the only things they're planning to make bank on in their pipeline is Angry Birds, more Underworld, and more Bad Boys. Nobody gives a shit about Robotech.
>>
>>14157192

>reeling from the loss of their Spiderman Marvel universe
They didn't lose Spidey, they made a deal with Marvel Studios. Sony still has rights to make and distribute Spider-Man movies. Marvel can use him in team-ups and Sony agreed to use the actor that Marvel cast so their new reboot can be tied in to all that MARVEL box-office.
>>
>>14157247
I never said they lost him, only that Sony had to toss their original plans for their own Marvel universe in the garbage because because their own Spiderman movies weren't making enough money, and this deal they made is their only real solution of 'saving' what they have. They have to split profits and piggy-back on someone else's work; A pretty big far cry from Sony's intentions of creating their own franchises to bank on.

>>14157218
That too, and Ratchet and Clank, come to think of it. All the more reason why Sony is focused on more important matters than trying to resurrect Robotech from the grave.

>>14157196
They've been selling toys and comics for nostalgia money from incredibly gullible fans at unreasonably high prices for years. Why break tradition now?
