There's too much stuff going on and the v-fin isn't integrated into the design at all and looks ridiculously out of place as a result (hence clunky). These issues are found on most Gundams, not just RX-78-2.

Again, there is barely anything going on. I don't know if you only like tubebots or something but the original RX is low on detail. The v-fin is no more out of place than the breast things on Mazinger Z. It looks fine, especially when comparing it to a kabuto.

Let's break down it's elements, then. I'm talking only about the frontal view here, since that's the most problematic.

>a red ridge beneath the border
>a mouth plate
>two vent lines on the mouthplate
>a red chin piece
>a helmet
>a mohawk on the helmet
>a red camera on the mohawk
>a continuous raised "earmuff" piece
>on the raised piece is a series of vents on both sides of the head
>yellow vulcans (white on some versions, but on the original they're yellow)
>a red jewel
>v-fin
So, no, there isn't "barely anything going on". That's a -lot- of stuff.
The colours aren't that big of an issue, but because the head has so much base detail already they make it even busier. But that's just the head, the entire design has one colour too many. Removing just one would make the colour scheme not-shit.
Then there's the v-fin. Not only does it look like someone just blu-tacked it on, the angle of the horns doesn't work with the very upright body shape of RX-78-2. That kind of angle would work on a wider design, like Virtue. The Crossbones have a good angle for the v-fin.
If the entire design was just the head as it is, it'd be fine. But since it also has a whole body with it's own detail to it, it's too much.
Considering the most recognizable features of the Gundam are the v-fin and the mouth grill, here's how I would fix it;

>remove the black vents on the sides of the head
>remove the vulcans, yellow or not
>raise the angle of the v-fin
>integrate the head camera and the v-fin into one shape that flows better, similar to Red Warrior and Zeta Plus.

The Gundam's head is pretty cohesive. Nothing intrudes upon anything, the v-fin angles you towards the face (y'know, arguably the most important aspect of a mech design), the the few colors there are pop in contrast with the base white.
What you're suggesting to "fix" it is incredibly boring and would make it looks like some generic robot. The entire point of a design is to hook the audience into looking at it, which is exactly what "Gundamface" does. It's heroic, instantly recognizable, familiar in what we see in it (it looks like a face- eyes+"mouth" grills), and can also look intimidating at specific angles. The Gundam head hits all the marks of a good hero design, which is a lot more than I can say for many of the other robots from that time.

Geara Zulu just looked like a GM playing dress-up. It didn't have any of the graceful curves that mark a Zeon design. While we did get a couple Dogas in Unicorn, it's a damn shame they had all new grunts for their main force only a short three years after CCA.
