You have to understand that in the Macross universe the viewers are never shown the real events. All the series, wether tv, ova etc... are in-universe fictional representations on the real in-universe historical events that took place. That's how for instance you reconcile the SDF Macross tv series with the film DYRL. You might say that everything is canon and nothing is because you would be right. In the end Kawamori doesn't give a fuck about continuity, he just came up with this "solution", ex post facto to shut up the fandom that were crying about the inconsistencies showing up in the various installments of the franchise.
