I'm watching the show after having seen the movies. The show has a bit more retarded shit in it, animation is worse, and the music isn't as good, although that's subjective. That being said, the show does develop its characters better. It's up to you which one you watch.

The highs were higher in the movie. The ending to the first film might be one of my favorite moments in anime; it felt like the end of a first act, while in the anime, it felt like just another episode.

Honestly, I found the movies to be a bit more enjoyable to watch. While some content is lost as a result, such as the Battle of Odessa and the Texas Colony battle with M'quve, it's a small consolation for a generally well paced (for the most part) experience. For a person just wanting to just jump into U.C's later entries, the films do a fine job of getting someone up to speed rather quickly. Watching the TV series has some perks and benefits, but the films quite honestly cut much of the useless fat the series had at times.

In terms of being more fun to watch, the TV series is probably going to be more fun, although some of the filler gets annoying.
Canon-wise though, I'm going to suspect a lot of people prefer what the movies did with some of the more... Bizarre elements. Like the G-Fighter. Or about half the mobile armors. And the goddamn Gundam Hammer.
...actually, I think I prefer Kondo's Gundam 0079 manga version- the G-Fighter isn't the toy seller of the TV series, the Federation gets a pretty badass air force, and the weirdness of Zeon's aesthetics gets toned down. And the land battleships make a lot more sense. But no one cares about that adaptation, and Viz never finished releasing it English, so fuck my life.

As someone who got into Gundam properly after watching Wing's entire original run on Toonami, I have to say starting off with the dubbed Gundam Movie Trilogy back in the early 2000s really got me into the franchise.
Especially the way Movie 1 ended.

They trim out a lot of the unnecessary elements like the Gundam hammer and take away some of the more super robot elements left over from the show's struggle to codify real robots. They play out more like a war drama than any of the mecha shows before them. The music is also a lot better as is the animation at times. Honestly though, The Origin manga is the best telling of the story in my opinion.

Yeah. It's not completely perfect though and there's still some hiccups, like when the Gundam fires it's beam rifle and the shot turns into a bunch of missles because it was using the G Armor in the show and they forgot to reanimate that shot.
But it's still much better despite that.
