That'd imply that people of the first movie care about Section 9 and the setting. I've only ever seen people praise its visuals and the usual Oshii navel-gazing, which is pretty much all it has going for it since in the 90 or so minutes of the first movie minimal time is given to develop any of the Section 9 cast members (For example, does Borma even get anything more than a line or two?) and the setting itself.SAC developed the world and characters a lot better and in depth, and the plot in both seasons was actually really interesting and compellingly written, which is why I greatly prefer it over both moviesFuck the team, they'll cast a few actors high off of Game of Thrones fame, Hollywood seems to love doing that recently, and some from the Marvel cape movies that'll be recognizable faces to the audience. Really the one issue I take with it is if the film is going to just do what Oshii did 100%.
I think GitS is useful as a sort of inkblot test, you have a cast that can be explored in various ways each of which provide insight into the minds of the creative forces behind a given incarnation.
...but if the theme, if the movie even follows one, ends up being some form of trans-identity stuff, hell I wouldn't mind. Thinking about it, fullbody prosthetics actually could work as a means of portraying the nature of identity in today's society, wherein the conflict between who we identify as on the inside and who we are on the outside can be erased through technology, and that perhaps because of the relative ease with which one can change their physical selves there may come a point where the physical self is reduced to a mere cosmetic feature.

It depends on if you're making a cyberpunk movie named GitS (which, in a way GitS WAS), or if you're making GitS. Because GitS, particularly SAC (which is at this point by far the most recognized incarnation of the franchise) is very much rooted in Japanese concerns and politics. And even the first movie is very Japan-centric in the way it treats its concepts: at least as far as Japanese entertainment is concerned, there seems to be this existential anxiety in Japan over what it means to be human, one that doesn't exist so strongly in the West. Maybe it's a question of the audience less so than the actual storytelling, but in that way, I think bringing GitS and the Major out of Japan does a disservice to the vision.

The reason I say Hollywood pull is because Johannsen is the reason this movie is getting made. LOGH is great series that I can say is better but no gundam that has ever come out can compete with the complete amazingness of GITS first and GITS: Second Gig. I watched all the gundam tv series and most of the movies and you kinda figure out that none of them are all that great. When the western genre revives, maybe. Hollywood only does 2DEEP-impact action & violence adaptions at the moment. If or when things mellow out we can look for jazzy adventure movies full of gunslinging, bounty hunters, outlaws, cowboys bebop-ing at their computers, and being broke.
I really hope that when a movie inevitably arrives to cash in on muh nostalgia it'll have good music. That's really going to make or break it. Plus if they try to make the story too linear and fast-paced. If it gets those three right then I can deal with whatever else the movie gives us.

Whenever I see things like this, it's always the [race]-Americans doing it. Like here, the ones who are likely first or second generation Japanese-Americans seem to be totally okay with it, as are Japanese themselves. But young Japanese-Americans are the ones protesting despite being the farthest separated from (and likely least knowledgeable of) the culture they claim to be protecting. Why does everything have to be about race? I'm all for celebrating heritage and history but suddenly everything has to be about how evil everyone was and we need to be reminded not to repeat history by (gasp) wearing a kimono and destroying their culture!!! I can see what the protesters meant when "line up wearing a kimono to imitate those whacky Japs" could be taken from it. But the museum went out of their way to add educational shit everywhere and STILL they're being racist and appropriating.
Would anyone here care if pic related were much more common? No, but some would still have to go out of their way and yell about how American global imperialism is the greatest evil in history and how the party needs to have a speech or two discussing why donning Stars and Stripes hats will allow them to feel the white guilt and Native American genocide or something.
