When did you discover that Power Rangers
was just a Japanese show with
some added American actors?
>>
I think I was watching Ninja Storm and there was one episode that I could see the credits and they said "Based on (I think it was) footage from Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger". That was when I first realized it. I didn't fully understand it until years later when I found Boukenger and it all made sense
>>
I think during Operation Overdrive, I had a feeling that some scenes had to be shot in Japan, I could feel it. Then I did Google magic and found out about Sentai
>>
>>14114078
No idea. I must have found out when I was a child though, since I don't remember when I found out, I just know about it. Even then I don't know exactly how I found out, I was only allowed on the internet on weekends when I was like 10 years old and I have a feeling I knew about it beforehand. Maybe my mom told me
>>
>>14114078
Knew before I'd ever seen Power Rangers.
>>
I honestly can't remember, I think maybe my dad mentioned it offhand once.
>>
Middle school, just after Wikipedia was started. I think someone on some forum I was on implied it, so I looked it up then.

Makes me wish I could see the original series right now, I just don't have the expendable income for the US release.
>>
>>14114078
SPD.
Shadow Ranger is obviously a very Japanese character. Then I googled "Power Ranger Japanese" and everything starts from there.
>>
>>14114121
What year were you born exactly?
>>
>>14114078
Weirdly enough, by paying attention to the credits of SPD. At the end of all Power Ranger credits, it says "adapted from [series]" or something like that. However, I didn't looked into it until several years later.
>>
>>14114132
Shadow Ranger was pretty great though.
>>
>>14114134

You are now realizing that Power Rangers is 23 years old.

There was a scene in MMPR where the monster grew and the Rangers showed up on scene. All the marking on the road was in Japanese, which 10 Yr old me thought was strange since they were supposed to be in Cali.

>>
>>14114665
I thought it was cool because people will learn of my love for the Dragonzord and I won't look like an esoteric faggot pretending to be a "zord" during recess.

I recognized quickly it wasn't exactly the same show but the general premise stayed more or less the same. Even if the fights were toned down and we didn't have fountains of blood coming out of people being uppercut by tiger claws.

But the toys were similar and as always I was overjoyed that I could share a bit of my cultural identity with my classmates and they thought it was cool.

Sometime while Time Force was airing. I found Gaoranger pictures online and used that as insider information as to what the next PR season would be.

I wasn't as cool as I thought I was considering me and everyone I knew were slightly above the target demographic.

I didn't get the full scope of Sentai till the end of RPM though when I finally decided to start watching "that Japanese Power Rangers show" when I heard RPM would be the last season.
>>
>>14114078
I vaguely recall seeing images from Geki/Go-On as well as word of much older Ranger shows while looking PR up around the time of RPM. I didn't get into it until the Legend War hooked me into Gokaiger.

It's one thing to learn that Sentai exists, but I wish somebody had told me earlier that the TVN "translate nothing" way was not the only way to watch these shows.

>>
Something like 4 years ago after being a fan of PR for 15 years. Funnily, when I saw the sentai episode in the Jungle Fury I thought Japan created their own version of PR. I'm sure I must of seen the name "sentai" on wiki pages before but just didn't care. I'm not very smart.
>>
I grew up with old scifi, kung fu and Godzilla flicks, so I was used to bad dubs. I hadn't watched shit like power rangers in years but saw a random clip of the bad guys in their fortress and realized everyone was voiced over.

I watched some Super Sentai series before Power Rangers existed. But I was like five years old and didn't understand the concept of franchise, I thought they were just independent series that followed the same style. So when PR came around here, I just thought "oh, now Americans are doing it too".
I don't remember when or how I learned how it all worked. I must have read about it in one of the anime/pop culture magazines we had at the time.

I dont remember when I literally learned about sentai though.

One main villain in in Go-Onger (from 2008 series) was an ex JAV actress. She had been working in real acting projects for a while before Sentai though, still kinda crazy to consider but she'd had a track record as a legitimate actress before it and she's the only case of such.

Later than I have any pride to admit. Older Sentai used to air in my country before PR took over and it took me an embarrassingly long time to put two and two together.
I remember reading an anime magazine as a kid, seeing the tokusatsu section with all those shows ending in -man my mom kept talking about, and just assuming PR was a spiritual successor to them or something like that.

I actually like Max Landis as strange as that is, but he's not the guy for this. He'd want to reinvent how people see it and totally shock expectations, and not really in a good way, if the ideas he has for other established IPs he's talked about in the past are anything to go by.

Found garo when I was 21 and learned the word tokusatsu so I looked it up and found sentai and kamen rider, which blew my mind and it surprised me how amazingly better sentai was to rangers. And kamen rider was badass to find. Also I figured out one of my fav toys growing up was the og ultra man. Toku was always in my life just took forever to learn about it

Now put aside Power Rangers, when did you discover that all those Saban shows you used to watch as a kid were Japanese shows?

I'm kind of amazed we don't even have a DVD release or anything yet. At least Beetleborgs and VR Troopers got them.

Possibly some rights issues with the Irishmen that Saban collaborated with.

When I first started browsing /m/ which is probably a year ago I think (maybe 2) only reason I didn't find out sooner is because I kinda forgot it existed between the ages of 10 and 20.

I believe I found out at some point after I stopped watching Power Rangers, then kinda forgot about it, then was reminded of it again several years later by a friend who was into Sentai. Then I started watching from there, and the rest is history.
