I think I was watching Ninja Storm and there was one episode that I could see the credits and they said "Based on (I think it was) footage from Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger". That was when I first realized it. I didn't fully understand it until years later when I found Boukenger and it all made sense
I think during Operation Overdrive, I had a feeling that some scenes had to be shot in Japan, I could feel it. Then I did Google magic and found out about Sentai

There was a scene in MMPR where the monster grew and the Rangers showed up on scene. All the marking on the road was in Japanese, which 10 Yr old me thought was strange since they were supposed to be in Cali.

I thought it was cool because people will learn of my love for the Dragonzord and I won't look like an esoteric faggot pretending to be a "zord" during recess.
I recognized quickly it wasn't exactly the same show but the general premise stayed more or less the same. Even if the fights were toned down and we didn't have fountains of blood coming out of people being uppercut by tiger claws.
But the toys were similar and as always I was overjoyed that I could share a bit of my cultural identity with my classmates and they thought it was cool.
Sometime while Time Force was airing. I found Gaoranger pictures online and used that as insider information as to what the next PR season would be.
I wasn't as cool as I thought I was considering me and everyone I knew were slightly above the target demographic.
I didn't get the full scope of Sentai till the end of RPM though when I finally decided to start watching "that Japanese Power Rangers show" when I heard RPM would be the last season.

I watched some Super Sentai series before Power Rangers existed. But I was like five years old and didn't understand the concept of franchise, I thought they were just independent series that followed the same style. So when PR came around here, I just thought "oh, now Americans are doing it too".
I don't remember when or how I learned how it all worked. I must have read about it in one of the anime/pop culture magazines we had at the time.

I think there was some kind of tv special behind-the-scenes thing around the time the original MMPR season started that explained it was originally a Japanese show. So I pretty much knew the whole time. I never actually looked into them until I came to /m/ and got interested in Sentai and Kamen Rider.
I had a couple friends in middle school who were giant fucking weebs (they still are, one of them is a professional cosplayer now) and they told me.
Funnily enough though I'm the only one out of us who's into toku, they're just anime/manga fans.

My first PR was Turbo. And the first episode I watched, i already noticed things like japanese texts and people, inconsistent footages making it look like spliced footage. And I was just 4 years old but already realised something was wrong with this show. Discovered Jetman the week after after a quick browse at a DVD store and finally got my answers.
Pretty early in the Mighty Morphin' run. I was already a geek who got on well with the local comic store owners, and I learned about Sentai via them because they would talk about how much better the original Japanese toys were.
