The best franchise ever, without any doubt, is Mobile Suit Gundam (Not G though). Not only is the plot amazing, it delivers important themes about society and has a lot of symbols about religion. Pisses me off that people don't understand how beautiful this series is and I just want to punch them in the face.

MD GEIST I & II
Fucking badass, like Votoms with crack and distilled violence tossed in. Geist is a murder machine and the 'plot' is nothing but the coolest shit possible condensed into 45 minutes.
Dragon's Heaven
More artsy, the style is very unique and its a recommendation because you'll never see anything else like it.
Cybernetics Guardian
This one is actually kind of shitty. It has a nice heavy metal track and one or two OK mecha designs. Up to you whether you want to spend 45 min on it.

Most sci-fi works have some aspect in their technologies that can be defined as mecha. The consensus is that mecha anime has a focus around the technology that is incorporated into the story. Outlaw star is more of a space opera like Star Wars or Mass Effect.

Different anon here, I just finished VOTOMS. It was good, quite enjoyable. Last arc was kinda wonky though. Last Red Shoulder was neat. Big Battle was also kinda ass, plot-wise. though the action was pretty great.
