OP here. I thought that overall, the series was pretty great, and definitely one of the most *entertaining* gundam series. Keyword entertaining, The plot was a bit shallow and Kou and Nina is seriously the most forced shit ever but overall I thought the characters were passable. The animation was absolutely gourgeous; watching it on a big TV with 5.1 really put me in the action. I liked the fighting overall but I thought the choreography could have been a bit better. Obviously, the mech designs are great, possibly the best of any gundam OVA. Overall, I'd say the first twelve episodes gets a 7.5/10, with the finale getting 1/10 because it's really bad

Really good for the first half, when the new director takes over it kind of goes to shit.

Nina and Kou almost swap personalities halfway through.
Keith and Moira are adorable.

Really, really cool with all the nods to Zeta in it, such as Haman showing up very briefly, Bask Om, and the Titans formation near the end. Would be nice if similar stuff happened more often in other UC works (CCA).

Delaz was a fun character and you couldn't help respecting him, even if only a little bit.

Any other Gundam MC has been a shitty invincible insert for the writers' ideas, forcing himself and said ideas on the audience with a horrible mix of boring fights and plothax mobile suits.
Loran is fine too.
At the very least 0083 is tense because Kou can and will fail in any moment, it's not as boring as 00, SEED or IBO where you know the "good" guys gonna win anyway and you're forced to get attached to secondary characters to feel anything.
Where's the fucking suspense in 00 S2?
What are the stakes in Unicorn since Banager can simply call upon the powers of afterlife, Getter energy or god knows what else and block colony lasers with a handwave?

The most fun I had watching Gundam, to be honest.
The ending was a mess, but everything leading up to it was great. Great mobile suit designs, great action, great music.
Kou and Gato were good characters, because it wasnt some magical NewType who gets handed a Gundam, it is just a grunt with good morals who everyone is against, and I identified with that more than most Gundam series. Nina did go crazy at the end, but I liked the way she flirted with Kou, Kou being so inexperienced with women, knowing only gundams and mobile suits, and Nina getting him to stop being a geek. Reminds me of a lot of actual Gundam fans.

Considering Delaz had plans to flee to Axis with the Axis fleet, I think he had hoped the plan would stifle the Federation's growth while Zeon's strength recuperated. His plan was apparently the destruction of Jaburo while Gato changed it at the last minute to farmlands to wipe out food production. Bask was noticeably distressed when the colony survived the solar system panel attack, so I think his and Jamitov's plans hinged on destroying the colony before it could be used as a weapon.
Gato changing the colony's course was something no one expected, but it absolutely worked out in the Federation's favor, especially Jamitov's. Because Jaburo's fleet and MS construction facilities remained intact, so everything they lost at Solomon (which were old ships not designed for carrying mobile suits) could be replaced with newer designs suited for a new future.
Operation Stardust failing to achieve its goal was, more or less, Gato's fault. The Titans probably would not have been able to build up as quickly if Jaburo had been destroyed. Destroying all that farmland? It just made a lot of people on Earth unsympathetic to Zeon's cause because now you're literally starving them.

Before watching this series, I always get spoiled about how Jaburo was abandoned but Gato realized that and then blah blah blah, yet like you said it turns out Jaburo didn't even evacuate in time, Kowen himself was still there to the last minute and there was no way he would have survived given how the colony flew over Jaburo.
Then again, I don't get how Nina didn't recognize Gato the first time during the Gundamjacking given they were lovers. Normally even if you were in shock you would ya know, shout the person's name to try and confirm it's them or something. Hell even if Nina was trying to keep it hidden and still stop him, she was way too good at hiding it compared to the rest of the series where she can't even hide her dere properly.
