Whatever war orphaned Maria and Serena must be fairly recent, and probably is part of the reason Yurope is the refereed to as the "dark continent." I assume it will be part of the plot for S4/5 since Maria and Tsubasa are there, and they'll probably explore FIS backstories some more with the added length. Inb4 trip to Maria's old village.
