The Re-GZ might be the worst design in Gundam history, it far surpasses the Turn A, Providence, Hi-Streamer, and the Gusion in terms of how shitty it is. I mean it looks like a fucking diseased shrimp.
That said, the Lightning Gundam is not shit.

I really liked how the shoulders line up with the chest, however this effect is lost when it hold it weapon up, which makes the entire thing looks kinda bland.

It isn't. Its issue isn't a inherently bad design, its issue is that it's stuck in a show that encourages the crazy, the heavily and stylistically modded, and the overboard.
Its silhouette is incredibly standard. Its lines are incredibly standard. Its weaponry is standard, its style is standard, the operator himself is standard in his piloting tactics. Its partners are a super transforming Gunpla and the other is a Hyper Move spammer, but an incredibly memorable spammer since any direct competitors are featured only once on the Plavsky field, let alone the same design for their kits.
While Yuuma may have scratch-built the Lightning it looks like he did it for a shot in being featured in UC-MSV rather than something he genuinely wanted. His building style in the series is a stark contrast to everybody else's entries which are either very heavy mods of existing kits that look more interesting than the Lightning, or flat out destroy it in the gimmicks, looks, and style category.
The Lightning in Try is something to which the term "born in the wrong era" is applicable down to the last pixel of its lineart. The poor thing should never have been designed for Try.

The designs that are pretty much "These look like regular MSV suits!" were kinda my favorite ones from Try. Plus, I'm a sucker for pretty much any of the Project Z derivatives. It lacked a shitload of flair compared to, like, every other Gunpla in the series, but it was still fun.

Ez-SR is great though. I haven't built my kit yet, but I'm excited for it.

I gotta agree, I think they have more of the original GBF's charm. Where as the new scratch build super customs just don't feel very Gundam-like.
The Re-GZ is basically the Chinese knockoff of the Zeta Gundam. Cheaper materials, lacks the functionality of the original and breaks easily.

I like the big solid piece of metal on its forehead and the skirt armor, but yeah, it's inferior to the Zeta in every way that matters. (I think one of the variants is better at atmospheric flight outside of waverider mode, but the important battles in Gundam are always in space.)

I think the only reason it looks bad is the red chin, if the chin wasn't read and was instead white/light green it would work a lot more
The Xi is hands down the single worst lead gundam ever designed.
