Revolutionary for its time, but readers nowadays would probably call it edgy.

Seinfeld was considered edgy in its time, and it was. It touched on subjects that tv just wouldn't touch. It pushed the envelope, which is what for the longest time it meant to be edgy.
The Contest episode is the perfect example of this. Back then NO ONE on television would talk about masturbation (with the exception of that brilliant Rodney Dangerfield bit on Carson where he said his sex life was so bad, he tried to masturbate and HE got a headache and wanted to go to bed). Hell the episode never even actually uses the word, they always say "master of your domain". But either way, people talked about the episode. Suddenly it became ok to mention, even joke about jacking off. That's what edgy is, it challenges the norm.

It's a very, very strange story, because it has the feel of myth to it. Sure, there are those strange monster-of-the-week encounters, but the tone and feel of the story itself is very apocalyptic.
I don't think Devilman ever wins a fight cleanly, to be honest. He loses a lot, and even his victories are kind of messed-up. I felt, early-on, that he couldn't really hope to win the final confrontation - And, guess what? He couldn't! The battle is so one-sided they don't even need to show it. We can be sure he fought valiantly to the very end, but Lucifer ultimately blotted him out.
Also, we can assume that all of the stuff like building an army of devilmen, fighting Lucifer's demons...It's ultimately pointless. Lucifer could likely annihilate them all by himself. But it's really more about the human spirit than anything else, or a mirror of how Lucifer first rebelled against God.
Overall, I get why the setting resonated so much. There are so many stories you could tell, and if I recall there was a Devilman RPG campaign setting (Japanese-only) which had a very striking method of character creation.
Each game started with all the PCs at the final battle. The story was about how you get there, and what you're hoping to accomplish before your inevitable death. Is there some rival you really need to duel? Do you want to get close enough to Lucifer for one last, defiant gesture before he turns you to ash?
And so on.

I'll just say that I liked that one about the boy-band, but the stories about Devilman travelling through time are uniquely insane. There's no rhythm, no reason, but they still managed to tell a compelling story somehow.
I mean, it's basically "Okay, they're in post-war Germany. NOW THEY'RE IN GREECE, complete with armor! Psych, they're meeting the Red Indians in the Wild West!"
It's like those crazy old Batman stories.

I enjoy Devilman a whole bunch. The original manga was legitimately good, while the Toei anime was dumb but fun (and back when I watched them even better due to the only option being the crabsticks). I wish the OVA series had continued past the halfway point.
