He only really used the katana because of its tactical relevance in the fight. Any sword would've probably done well, to a point where I think it'd have been better if it was a european-style sword since those have more of a thrust-friendly design going on with them, plus it complements Barbatos' design better.
But what can you do, the space mafiyakuza love their Japanese cultural appropriation.
The thing though is that Mika's historical preference has been in first-hit-kills impact weaponry, as exemplified in his going straight for the dinohammer instead of any other weapon, along with the early show spike-driver mace. The fight with Ein illustrated that the hammer and any similarly heavy weapon has a clear weakness against enemies who don't just stand there dumbfounded like the average Graze-riding Hornblower. At the same time, those weapons play into Mika's fondness for abrupt overwhelming offense, so clearly he'd want some kind of impact weapon.
My conclusion would be that a halberd would best suit him. You can design one to combine aspects of spear, blade and hammer all in a long reaching and versatile weapon. Hell, if the Teiwaz techies really want to show off, they could find a way to incorporate the katana into the design, using the halberd as a highly functional sheath of sorts to the katana.
But that's just my thoughts on the matter. I do like that he focuses on the functionality of the weapon moreso than the cultural aspects that go into NIHONTO LMAO

If you directly stab with a Katana you risk breaking the blade fairly easily.

I'm a club, hammer, and fist kind of guy, so the katana doesn't do anything for me.
Hell, Barbatos was slowly growing on me due to how "physically beating the shit out of opponents" it was. If everyone gets swords in S2, I'm not gonna be too thrilled.

He didn't figure out anything, Barbatos info-dumped him. However, it's still a pay off from way back when he got the thing. When he first sorties with the katana he specifically says that he doesn't get the weapon and rarely uses it thereafter. After Barbatos connects to him further and feeds more information to him he learns to use it, basically taking half the season to figure out how to use something that isn't a blunt impact weapon. They really should have given Mika the hammer from the Gusion.

Is there confirmation on this? The way I see it, all Gundam Frames have the potential to turn their pilots into a fully integrated Alaya Vijnana user like Eins. When Mika asked Barbatos for more power, it did a partial but irreversible modification that gave him full integration with Barbatos' right eye and arm. This was done since he needed to wield the katana with perfect hand-eye coordination, so only his right arm and eye got integrated. The more power he keeps on asking for, the more Barbatos is gonna have to modify his body, and the more limbs and senses he's gonna have to sacrifice. It's like making a deal with the devil, which I suppose is the reason why the Gundam Frames in this series were named after demons.
Oh, and full man-machine integration is obviously the "Newtype/Innovator/Coordinator" element in this show, given how Gjallarhorn/"Oldtypes" are so against them.
