I'd hesitate to call it normalfag just yet. The only reason Its ranked highly on MAL is because their rating system is dumb. It only counts your vote if you've seen a fifth of the series. For LOGH that's 22 episodes. Most people who dislike it won't get that far. If you compare the actual number of people who have it completed, its a fraction of the other "top shows". As for the novels "gaining popularity" I'd say it way to early for that call. Only one has been released and the "high sales" bar for a translated LN is pretty low.
I'm also doubtful it will ever go normalfag. Its way too long for the casual normalfag to get into, the animation is also too dated for the regular normalfags, and there's also little in the way of fan service for the average normalfag .

That's where I've gotten to for shows. But some things are really subjective and hard to peg. Like most /m/ I have favorites/hatred of certain Gundams. But something like oh say... the Macross series is even more polarized. I ain't repicking friends over the TV they watch. The can't/won't threshold is silly to bring up or fight. Like playing reality TV exclusively when you make the time, and you hate reality TV.
