In terms of animation quality here goes :
Macross 1982 substandard animation even for the times. Very few episodes are well animated. The rest is between bad and atrocious. It's pretty obvious it was a low budget production.
Macross 1984 DYRL : A ton of money was poured on this film and it FUCKING SHOWS. One of the best animated feature films of the eighties. The story is still a mess but hey who cares right ? You get to see the SDF-1 in all its glory as well as the valkyries. Milia as hot as ever.
Macross II 1992 : The first OAV and the quality shines through. Characters designed by the H man himself. Mecha are different yet interesting even though not designed by Kawamori. A different take on the Macross universe. Some love it, some hate it but nobody is indifferent to it.
Macross 7 + ova/films: First real tv sequel to Macross. Animation so so for a tv series of 50 episodes. Great recurring characters and great music. Love or hate, there is no in between.
Macross Plus : The outlier to the Macross franchise even though created by Kawamori. Very serious, astounding animation even for an oav. But but but it's not epic. It feels small.
Macross Zero : Good quality for an oav. The story is new age and tends to irk old time macross fags that think Macross Plus is the defining Macross. Seriousness to the extreme and fuck everything else. Nope. Zero has Fokker and Mao and a great experimental valkyrie. Great aerial fights.
Macross Frontier : third tv series of the Macross franchise. Great entry, good animation, good characters and one of the most interesting and not mundane storylines in the whole franchise. A definite keeper.
Macross Giri giri ai : Who knows ? Could end up being a hit, could end up being shittier than SDF Macross.

Serious answer: the first few episodes of Macross are interesting, but you are still basically getting setup for the true show to come. Macross is one of those shows that gets exponentially better the more the bad guys are onscreen, because they story is really about the Zentradi more than it is the humans.

I have actually yet to watch all of SDF, even in its western Robotech form. I did read Macek's novelization of the SDF part of Robotech though, and I thought it was really pretty good.
Plus was pretty phenomenal action- and animation-wise, and it had a really great soundtrack. I could never seem to get very invested in the characters, though. Movie version has less mecha action, but has a much tighter plot, and a MUCH more satisfying ending. The OVA version ending just feels so anticlimactic by comparison.
Zero was okay.
7 was stupid as hell, but in such a way that it made it extremely fun. And from Dynamite 7, Angel Voice is a fucking phenomenal song. Especially the Basara/Minmei version that doesn't actually show up in the show itself, sadly. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSzBuSdtQTk)
Frontier was cringe-worthily melodramatic at times, but I for one thought the CGI animation was actually quite decent, and it was pretty watchable overall, at least.The resolution to the love triangle was a cop-out though, and I don't much care for the movie version. The soundtrack however, especially the instrumental stuff, is really, really good.
