It took him 25 episodes to accomplish what Char did in 10 all the while he does nothing but provides exposition with a poorly thought out motivation on top of it. He suffers the same problem as Zechs and Rau, he's a Char cosplayer with nothing else to his name.

right before the episode aired there were fake spoilers that mcgillis gives his speech to gaelio after crippling his suit and then leaves and mika comes to finish him off. and that he didn't kill gaelio so he could continue to manipulate ein who's death wasn't known at that point and almiria. He's not going full Char that's for sure, but I do think you're selling him short with Zechs. Zechs really only has the designs to his credit. McGillis is an entertaining scumbag (at least in these last few episodes).
If we were just to compare the betrayal scenes between Char and McGillis, I favor McGillis, if only because Gaelio had more impact than Garma.

Char only pulled his thing off by killing everyone involved and going into hiding until Zeon was radical enough again that they'd accept a war criminal as a leader. Chocochar hid his trail so well that he's basically Gjallarhorn's leader and literally screwing the sister of the duke-in-waiting he killed.

Gllajarhorn was told to be evil but the only bad thing we saw them doing was the Dort colony massacre. Gali and Carta were good people and we sympathised with them.

I personally don't like shows where the protagonists kills too many good people who were either manipulated, on the wrong side of the wall, or were mind controlled. See Saint Seiya and Digimon Tamers.

Ending was rushed, pacing was slow in the middle, we lost RAIS YO FLAAAG, and the 360 on the pilot deaths Ein should have gotten in 24 was mad gay
I was also kind of looking forward to a semi-downer ending where Makanai fucked them all over as opposed to the neat bow we got.
That all said it was alright. When we did have the fights they were cool, and the world building was good.

Well, thing is, Arbrau had already been favorable towards Kudelia' proposals, which suggests that Makanai was already generally on her side. He seemed to suggest that his exile was pretty recent, so we can conclude that it was his government that was in discussions with her before the show began.
