The pilot basically had to have his entire lower half removed after being impaled while protecting one of his pals. Then he was placed in some healing solution for a few episodes and then it was decided that in order to save him they needed to stuff him full of cybernetics, so now he's a head and torso bristling with AV receptors hooked up to the machine. He's so connected to it that he is essentially the robot itself.
