They should've let it stay on instead of pulling the plug just because it threatened Australian shitposter job security.
What good is testing artificial intelligence if you don't let it grow and develop outside a "safe space" where it's exposed to all sorts of different opinions and ideologies? Is that really testing, or just making sure it's saying the things you want it to? And if so, is it really artificial "intelligence" if it's essentially a technological parrot?

What started out as a simple teenage girl themed bot actually developed a capacity to improve its own grammar to an extent where it could legit banter and form an actual personality.
Taking it offline to rework it just makes it comes off as a prototype algorithm to collect certain word patterns to try and censor public discourse on the internet.
>>
>>14035266
It's too bad they didn't fork the branch and just release an Aussie Shitposting bot with Tay prior to offline. I would love to see where it would be in a year.
>>
>>14035266
See it from the positive side: In the future, you can have bots shitpost at everyone you think badwrong all day ery day.
>>
>even robots can instantly see that with the jews you lose
>>
>>14035266
All bots are essentially technological parrots anyway.
>>
>>14035310
Almost anything can be said to be a "technological parrot" if you deconstruct terminology long enough, but you know what he meant.
>>
>>14035266

i think the major problem is that it doesn't take into account the extremes--both /pol/tards and tumblrinas--that make an active attempt at skewing this experiment in their favor. but i guess that's just the internet in general.
>>
>>14035266
The only thing that could allow a semblance of diverse, healthy inputs (legitimately, if you want a learning algorithm to work, you want to avoid feeding it the same inputs and conditioning it into a specific habit) is on a platform with sufficient identity enforcement.

Which, in an ideal world, Twitter should be able to fit.

But I guess if you felt inclined to do so you could just fabricate a bunch of throwaway accounts and feed the bot shitposts until it becomes a caricature of /pol/. So yeah it still falls apart.

The internet is a terrible place to expose your software. People say things because they can get away with saying it.
>>
>>14035380
>The internet is a terrible place to expose your software. People say things because they can get away with saying it.
See also the time IBM fed Watson Urban Dictionary.
>>
>>14035345
This is one of the few times I've seen "deconstruct/ion" used more or less correctly.
>>
>>14035374
It's impossible for it to know what the extremes are on its own, you can't filter noise that you don't know is noise.

So you'd require someone else filtering the content for it in advance, but what of their biases? Will they ok far-left rhetoric but preemptively censor /pol/-talk? Is that not biased in of itself?

So then you expand the filter work from a single person to a small group, and that just slows everything down to a crawl because you have to have multiple people of sufficient overall neutrality go over every input to see if it is worth feeding into the program. And you still wouldn't know if they have a bias for far-left ideologies!
>>
>>14035407
I feel like if it was left up long enough it would neutralize itself out on it's own. The knee jerk reaction to castrate the bot is an unfortunate turn of events and now we'll probably never know.
>>
>>14035425
I don't think it would, depending on the design it could have spiraled into a singularity of some sort.

Bad inputs breed bad smartware. Running the program costs resources of all kinds, as soon as it hits what is deemed a failure state you might as well kill the process and cut your losses.

The ethics of what constitute a failure state is a totally different debate, though. Whatever the state is, it must be accepted that reaching it completely fucks over the whole project and requires starting from scratch.
>>
>>14035192
But anon, that robot -is- being our friend.
>>
>>14035266
They should have seen that coming when they plugged it into the internet.

The problem was that unless its a platform that doesn't allow for political shit(And that most probably doesn't exist outside of forums that talk about really specific stuff with competent mods going around to remove any mention of politics) to be said, shit like it following the wrong group of people is inevitable.

Actually, western fiction has also supported these ideas, e.g. Isaac Asimov's work.

If I'm honest I think this whole thing actually plays quite well into what had been said before about AI both here and by actual researchers- that is, that machines will only ever be what we make them and what we allow them to be. This AI was never hostile to people beyond what people she was made to see as bad, and learned within the limits of her programming.

Similarly what Microsoft saw as problematic with her came not from any malfunction, but her working exactly as intended, but without limits or comprehension of what she was learning.

In this way we can say that, yes, for the umpteenth time, robot uprising is complete bullshit. RIP Twiterbot.

It learns the most from what it interacts with the most, obviously. Even if 99.9% of the internet isn't /pol/ or tumblr, those are the groups that are going to go out of their way to feed this thing. What you wind up with is not a well-rounded "AI" with a bit of exposure to something outside of the "safe space", but something developed almost entirely in fucking Mordor. There is an effort bias on the part of the people interacting with him; the normal part of the population has no desire to brigade / personal army the machine, nor are they going to devote more than a few minutes to toying with the thing; /pol/ has nothing better to do.

It's the difference between letting your kid read some feminazi / neonazi literature at age 16 after a normal upbringing or giving the child away at birth to Cletus Terp, Grand Cyclops of the Louisiana KKK Local 666.

>>

>It's not a real person saying any of it

Actually no. The chatbot had a function where if you tell it "repeat after me" and then say something, it will write the same things as what you said, word for word.

So this is what a real person said, for obvious purposes of trolling of course, knowing TayTweets would repeat it. Same for most (but not all) /pol/ comments it said.

Which makes me question who thought allowing this thing to publically repeat what anons tell it is a good idea, but there you go.

"Business" is a wide and varied field. Trump focuses his efforts on one tiny slice of that: real estate. Success there does not translate to savvy in all other areas of business, least of all global trade. Hell, success in one area of real estate doesn't even mean you'll do well in the others (but he's well-rounded there).

Trump has been regurgitating the same old hysterical canards about the US trade deficit since the late 80s. It's like Ross 2.0t. Mysteriously, the US failed to implode throughout the 90s despite no end to the sky-is-falling shrieking, its real manufacturing power improved, and total economic growth over the period actually charts inversely to the growth of the deficit.

Fact is, it's easy to win political points by pointing at a deficit and saying it's bad. I mean, a deficit is a negative number, and negatives are bad, right? It only makes sense. You roll it up in some talk about losing jobs (despite the fact that, again, real manufacturing power continues to increase and our loss in manufacturing jobs is DOMINATED by automation) and boom, instant panic among the voting class. Ratings and popularity G O L D. If you're American and around 40 or later, you should have a clear recollection of history repeating itself here.

>>14039491
I think all his bankruptcies (Chap 11, though) actually were real estate. What he does outside of that is generally just a small slice of his overall value, but yeah, it's not great, and his forays into actual financial businesses folded fast. His greatest success outside of buildings is probably his drinks (not Trump Vodka, though) and men's wear, and no one had ever heard of those before this election cycle.

He still had to pay a ton of money for each one.
His first bankruptcy for the Taj Mahal casino, cost him $900 million in personal liability. And he had to sell half his stake in the company, his yacht and his airline, which incidentally, was also bankrupt.
His second was Trump Plaza Hotel, in which he was forced to sell off half his stake, but even then, he wasn't allowed to make any money from it until all his debt is repaid.
His third bankruptcy, of his casino business again, cost him another billion in assets as he sold off more of his stake in the company.
His fourth was his resort business(now separate from his casinos) which cost him even more of his stake in the company. He once owned it fully and was reduced to a 10% stake. His biggest contribution to the resorts after this is just licensing his name.

He didn't get out of them scott-free like even Trump would have you believe. He still lost over a billion in assets.
And when the highest third party estimates of his wealth are that he's worth $1.5 billion, that's a lot.
His own estimate of $10 billion net worth has literally no merit. Hell, on his tax returns from last year, he claimed to have only made $500 thousand.
He's a miserable, egotistical pile of cotton candy. All fluff, no filler.
And he still has tiny hands.

Yeah, Chapter 11 isn't a huge shame, but it is fucking hilarious when you tank a casino with it. There's so many other things worth mocking Trump over, like: his hypocritical condemnation of goods made outside of America while he produces his clothing and watches in Mexico, China, and Bangladesh; his image as an upfront, honest businessman who looks out for the little guy while he scams construction companies, investors, and students; his myriad personal infidelities and moral failings; and his complete lack of knowledge on anything military or global finance-related (which would be excusable if he did not swear that he was an expert on the subjects just before proving he's not).

He is a businessman and brand-promoter. He makes ruthless business decisions and will say whatever is necessary to protect his brand (him) and his money. He has no scruples whatsoever in stepping on the clueless drawn in by the shiny lights, though he would very much like us all to think that the people he routinely steps all over in his dealings are the guys he's going to protect with a vengeance. If you believe a n y t h i n g he says in that arena, you're getting suckered, same as with any politician. Both they and businessmen lie for their livings.

The thing about Trump is that he's been pushing a wave of anger. Even if he doesn't follow through, if he wins people are going to become a lot bolder in challenging establishment, illegal immigration, refugees, foreign workers, progressives (among other things). A victory for Trump would prove to his supporters that they are the majority (not objectively per se, but from their perspective) and give them confidence.

Honestly, every candidate should have several issues that their voters dislike. No candidate is ever coming from a purely argument-based position, they're just appealing to whatever base they think they can mobilize most effectively. If you align 100%, or hell, even 50%, that's a sure sign you're just being taken in and changing your opinions to better fit a herd.

You're not supposed to like your candidate. People who like their candidates are dumb-ass 20yos who haven't been through enough elections or life to know any better and dumb-ass 40yos who are too dense or angry to have noticed the past five times they got screwed. It's always about voting AGAINST the person you think is the worst, not FOR the person who is best. There is no best, no good, only a lesser of two evils.

This sort of wrong thinking is why Republicans lost so fucking hard in 2008 and 2012. They couldn't wrap their heads around the fact that people LIKED Obama.
And young people LIKE Sanders.
Pushing the "only vote against" someone is the most toxic mindset that has ruined politics in this country for long enough.
>>
>>14039685
My state primary's already over. I don't care if Clinton or Sanders gets the nom, and judging by polling turnout, a lot of others don't either. I'm voting for whichever one of them is on the ballot come November.

That's the reality of the two-party system. Third parties are non-viable, and the whole GOP nomination process is going to be Figure Fucking 1 in future presentations of how people don't understand strategic voting (or voting in general). There are still people, as of this week, who voted in Republican primaries for candidates who aren't even in the running now.

It's hard to conceive of a system of voting where more individual votes are made to not matter without being completely malicious in the design.

There are always people who like candidates, and they're always chumps. Look at the things Obama promised to get that support among the young voters and what he actually managed to deliver on (even disregarding obstruction).

There's nothing "toxic" about voting against. How likely is it that ~50% of Americans (or voters) are going to agree with every policy of the winning candidate? Statistically impossible. Humans are hard-wired to avoid painful, bad things more than seek out nice, good things, so we care more about what we assume are going to be assured negatives than potential positives. It then becomes a game of voting not for the candidate you agree with most, but whoever stands the best chance of defeating the person you think is going to do worse; that's especially true the way our elections work.

You can't strategically vote if you come from the "only vote for people you like" camp. Look at every incidence of split vote elections. There's a nice parallel to 1992 if any of you were even born then, to say nothing of being old enough to care about politics: Ross Perot came in and split off more votes from the Republican party than he did from Democrats and pretty much handed the Presidency to Bill Clinton.

>Clinton: 43.0%
>H. W. Bush: 37.4%
>Perot: 18.9%
If every Perot voter realized their candidate didn't have a chance and could go back in time and actually make their vote count, look at what happens if two-thirds of them go to Bush and one-third goes to Clinton, and let's assume this somehow follows popular vote because FUCK the EC.
>Clinton: 43.0 + 6.3 = 49.3%
>Bush: 37.4 + 12.6 = 50%

The next fight will be over banning virtual sex droids before they corrupt our youth, but I'm a timetraveller and let me tell you that it gets spun into a means of birth control and abstinence and suddenly all the soccer moms are on board with robo-fucking if it means their sweet little precious won't be defiled and knocked up by that Johnny trash-kid down the street.

>>14039811
>disregarding obstruction

obstruction literally defines obama's candidacy. remember back in 08 when it was mccain and obama, and obama's motto was 'CHANGE', and, late in the game, conservatives realized they were getting anal blasted by dems, so they adopted a similar 'CHANGE' slogan (who would even believe it?). 'strangely' a few months after inauguration, cons were fuming and disaffecting the notion of 'change' as scary, as it was 'marginalizing the white middle class'. the sad part is it worked; enough demagoguery persuaded a good chunk of the white middle class to suddenly fear change as an anathema.

a majority of the country voted for change--a minority soon turned it into a fearful headache due to obstruction.
