My headcanon is that, since MS variants seem to be fairly efficient to produce in very small numbers (MSV-R backs this up) that things like MP ZZ are allowed to exist because they can gather combat data. So you test out what features work well and which ones don't, and you add the good stuff on to your tried-and-true main line. Here, the MP ZZ was (headcanon still) very influential on the production of the GM III, and retains some of the leg design, shoulder function, etc. Since the GM III is a glorified upgrade of the GM II, they kept much of it the same. Huge changes due to an accumulation of minor improvements sacrificed for cost eventually culminate in the Jegan.
Basically I like to imagine that all the MSV shit has a purpose. Even if features aren't absorbed into a mainline MS, the data still shows what tactics helped, how efficient certain weapons are, and more. Kind of like lab tests except people die in them.
The only explanation for "well here's your hyper-strong [GNDM] xxxRGM-360KKK_GM_KFC_Killa_Kustomxxx" being one-offs is either unique bullshit like EXAM or pure cost of materials/special construction processes.

If I'm being difficult and picking things from other franchises, Jehuty. It's my favourite /m/ design from anything ever. But within the Gundam franchise, it's the Adele. Colour scheme alone goes to the Psycho Zaku, but I adore the Adele as a bog-standard grunt.

I wouldn't know, I haven't seen the manga actually. I just stumbled upon the thing one day and thought it was neat. I'd guess it'd probably have something to do with the fact that both the Dijeh's engineers at Karaba and the Rick Dias's engineers at Anaheim formerly worked for Zeon, with their designs reflecting this heritage, and at some point they passed on the designs to Axis. Sort of how the Bawoo is a Zeonified Zeta.

I'm Kshatriya fag and have this to say - in Unicorn, it was underutilized.
No multidirectional beam spam coordinated with funnel attack. Nothing beyond straight overpower of other machines. And then NT-D kicks in and kills it's main advantage.
Still, with that amount of armor, I-fields and overall bulkiness, end was butthurtingly irritating. Still a sexy design. Armored Gundam from Thunderbolt and Cardigan are sweet too.

Not worst but because of iconic imagery they can't really be made to look differently. Gundam must be Gundam, otherwise it's any other generic hero suit. As some examples in UC shows, slapping V-fin onto worker pod or a Ball is enough for that to be in effect.
