Falcom games are always kinda like that, they look like even blander versions of your trope filled JRPG schlock, but while they still have plenty of cliches, they're more subdued and "honest" about them, and they end up being pretty endearing when coupled with the attention to detail and ridiculous amounts of worldbuilding.

Try out Ys sometime if you like Legend of Heroes, they're fucking baller and would've killed the Zelda series if America had taste.

Don't blame America, blame Falcom's release platforms. Falcom has always made great games, but for the wrong platforms. All of the definitive versions of Falcom games were on systems like the PC-98, Turbo Duo, PC (for a Jp market), PSP and Vita.
>>
>>14029083
Since the latter two are dead in the water, maybe they'll stand a chance now, since they'd have to focus on the PC and/or whatever PS console.

Because she's astoundingly optimistic, outgoing, and determined to face adversity, but written so well that those traits don't become grating. She's flawed, very flawed initially, but able to demonstrate true character growth over the course of the series. When characters comment on how her optimism and upbeat attitude make her "shine like the sun," it's something that the games actually demonstrate. She has moments of weakness, but presses on instead of angsting about them. Even when things look their bleakest. The escape from the Glorious is probably the best demonstration of this. Top it off with some genuine heroism and it's just hard not to like her.

Gonna have to agree with him here, I've never seen the new art before and I've only recently started the game but the old stuff looks better. The new ones don't really convey the expressions as well, or maybe it's because I'm seeing the entire range of the old art next to like 4 images of the new art.
>>
>>14037153

>>14037196
I don't know, but the new art just looks too flat to have expression. I think that's exactly what it is, actually. The colors on the new art are flat, especially the skin, while the old portraits had a little bit of depth. Or maybe it's the angle. The head-on angle looks like it fits the expressions more than the off-center one, especially when her mouth is open. I don't have this problem with many things but maybe I'm just autistic. The old art just looks better to me and maybe it's 100% preference but I'll still stick to it.
>>
>>14037216
She's a tough melee'ing tomboy. You can't expect her to have dainty thin Code Geass arms.
>>
>>14037271

Bro this is RPG world. A tough meleeing tomboy could be anything from a 36 year old chain-smoker who is also somehow a fitness enthusiast to a 12 year old toothpick who hits like a truck. Berserker.
>>

>I don't know, but the new art just looks too flat to have expression. I think that's exactly what it is, actually. The colors on the new art are flat, especially the skin, while the old portraits had a little bit of depth.

They both use the same two-tone color scheme.

>Or maybe it's the angle. The head-on angle looks like it fits the expressions more than the off-center one

There's no difference in how expressive they look based on that. They both just use a static face while changing the mouth and eyes to invoke expression. They literally use same exact method and have about the same level of detail. In fact, the newer portraits actually have a little more facial detail in the way of visible teeth and lines around the eyes to give depth. The old one just has simple eyes and mouth with blush lines on the cheeks.

>maybe it's 100% preference
It is. You're just don't realize what's a baseless opinion and what's substantiated. You like one over the other and to you that means that obviously it's better or has more to it because you like it. In reality, you only like one better than the other because you encountered one of them first and set that one as "the way it should be" in your mind.
>>
>>14036235
I think I do have a slight preference for the original art over the newer version, but the real tragedy was her outfit change in SC.
>>
>>14037249
>The colors on the new art are flat, especially the skin, while the old portraits had a little bit of depth.
The old portraits had more detailed shading, and used slight gradients. That's probably what you're seeing.

>>14037308
>They both use the same two-tone color scheme.
Older pictures clearly have soft shadows around the whole face giving it depth. Look at the nose and cheekbones or the three shades of light on her neck. The colors on the new art are uniform and separated by distinct lines. It's a different style but it's stupid to deny the differences.
>In fact, the newer portraits actually have a little more facial detail in the way of visible teeth and lines around the eyes to give depth. The old one just has simple eyes and mouth with blush lines on the cheeks.
Stylistic choices. Not everyone shows teeth when they open their mouths and the eyes have nothing to do with depth, they simply changed shape and slightly updated the style.
>It is. You're just don't realize what's a baseless opinion and what's substantiated. You like one over the other and to you that means that obviously it's better or has more to it because you like it.
That's actually exactly what I was getting at in my post retard, which is why the arguments became more baseless as the post continued until they reached resignation, but you're so hopped up on letting people know that you're right all the time on the internet that you couldn't see. But when I see the second face, it doesn't jump out at me the way the original art does. It seems like it's flat on the screen. Call it character, call it style, but the right one doesn't look as good to me. That's all I said.
>In reality, you only like one better than the other because you encountered one of them first and set that one as "the way it should be" in your mind.
I don't do this with basically any other redesign. This isn't nostalgiashit or me bring stuck in old ways or an attachment to one or the other. Like I've said from the beginning (which you would have realized if you read the post I responded to) this is about preference.

Whether or not you like the older artstyle more it is a fact that the original art has way more expressions. One could argue that this makes the newer games objectively inferior at expressing.

>No, it has a shadow tone, a light shadow tone, skin tone and highlights.
And all the gradients in between. New art has high contrast between colors and almost no highlight.
>The lines around the eye are a detail to outline the underlying eyeball like you would see in real people.
I can't tell if you mean the lines on the circumference of the eyeball or the ones near where the eye socket and bridge of the nose meet. The lines actually touching the eyeball are present in the original art. The others are accomplished using shading instead. If you can't tell where the eyeball is on the old art then you're blind. But for yet another time, these are stylistic choices. Neither one is closer on a chart of objective artistry for anime girl faces, you're just denying features that is clearly present because you think I'm stating objective superiority.
>I was agreeing with your "maybe it's 100% preference" statement and expounding on it
But you added shit like "You like one over the other and to you that means that obviously it's better or has more to it because you like it." which is a disagreement, dipshit. I stated which one was better in my eyes.
>I don't give a single fuck about your claims. Stick to the topic at hand.
Your claim of my liking one due to the order in which I saw them was unsubstantiated and I responded to say it wasn't.
>which you would have realized if you read the post I responded toI agree'd with it. Please learn to read, you're leaking stupid everywhere.
No, you seem to think I am basing this all on objectivity of quality when I'm stating what I like about the old art and what it makes me feel. My first post was me agreeing with the guy who said he liked the old art and I offered a reason why I liked one over the other. Since then you've been blatantly denying qualities in the original art for no reason other than to argue. I don't know if you're a shitposter or just assblasted but it's pathetic.
>>
>>14037747
Oh shit, is that what this is all about? Because I didn't say it conveyed emotion as well TO ME? >>14043416
It's more certain things getting clearer due to events in SC,for example FC's PSP translation says the arranged marriage is to be between the princess and the Empire's Crown Prince, whereas SC clarifies that he may be the Emperor's eldest son, he's not in the line of succession. I think the PC version fixes this.
>>
>>14043416
>>14043424

Different guy.

Guy who fucked up FC's PSP translation was Deuce, a Ys fan translator whose scripts for Ys games were purchased by XSEED. He caused not delays but instead major translation errors both grammatical and vocabulary, some of which you can tell its wrong without even knowing Japanese. http://pastebin.com/rbzRWNxi

Guy who fucked up SC's translation was Andrew Dice, who caused delays by falling behind schedule and further delays for XSEED having to clean up his terminology fuckups and script format fuckups.
>>
>>14044184
>Now, keep in mind that these are just a couple of examples. Literally every other scene past chapter 1 (it seems the prologue and ch1 were translated by someone else) are full of errors of similar magnitude, including pretty much all important scenes that foreshadow things for SC and games even further in the series.

Eh, to be honest i think Rean and Lloyd are similar, both has cliche mouth and dense as fuck. If there is differences then Lloyd is smarter and Rean is stronger do his hidden power and being Yun's student. Though to be fair i heard Rean has development in CS2 while i just finished black dog case in zero yesterday, which probably just a quarter of the story.

Lloyd is more interesting with the way that he solves cases and his speeches. Rean's personality is dull and he really doesn't have anything interesting to say in a lot of situations. The only way they tried to make him interesting is by adding more powers in the second game.
>>
>>14058092
Lloyd's personality is better but Rean actually has internal conflict and more fleshed-out character.

I like Lloyd more but they play to different strengths.
>>
>>14058163
>internal conflict and more fleshed-out character
Lloyd has that too except he actually have a personality.
>>
>>14059606
He doesn't really have as much, though. Lloyd feels much more like a competent everyman whose character is more about helping everyone else out with their issues. He doesn't really come into his own as a great character until the last chapter of Ao, I don't think.

Like I said, though, Lloyd's better than Rean, but CSII does a lot to make Rean interesting even if his personality doesn't stand out much. And even his lack of personality is kind of an in-universe thing since he specifically tries to not stand out.
>>
>>14059840
I found Lloyd's internal conflict with his brother and abilities more well written than Rean trying to control his special darkness powers. I honestly cant stand how the story shoves his powers into the story while he keeps whining about it.

I always wanted to get into these games, is there a list of what games to play first and what not?
>>
>>14067189
Starting points in English are either Sky (First Chapter)on PC/PSP or Cold Steel on PS3/Vita.
Sky is set 2 years before Cold Steel and is recommended, but Cold Steel works as a starting point as well, only real spoiler is what a character's real identity is.
Zero is the start of the other arc that runs parallel to Cold Steel but isn't translated.

If you like a fairly straight forward journey type RPG, start with Sky, just be warned it starts slow. If you want something more akin to Persona, start with Cold Steel, the combat system is also a bit more refined there (casters aren't as overpowered).
>>
>>14024742
>but mostly in Trails of Cold Steel.
So you can ignore Trails in the Sky altogether?
>>
>>14067226
If you're in it solely for giant robots, Trails in the Sky only has a couple of them, both boss fights. You don't get to actually control a giant robot until the final chapter of Trails of Cold Steel. Trails of Cold Steel 2 will have a lot more robots though.
>>
>>14067226
Here's the PV of 2nd cold steel just in case everyone wondering.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkKo5epzMlM
I think each 2nd installment of each arc has robots and airships, Trails in the sky SC and Ao no Kiseki.
>>
>>14067226
Yeah, Sky was a long-ass 100 hours of adventure. If you have some kind of OCD and like to pay attention to the smallest details then it's the game for you. Otherwise it's just a boring game with some cool scenes and revelations every 10 hours.

FC is tolerable and quite fun because it's the first time you visit Liberl and everything was fresh. But once you get to SC you'll start wishing for the game to just end already.

scientific advancement usually has a hard time taking place in a vacuum, it works better when you have free exchange of ideas, peer review, and collaboration between people with varying skillsets. Sure you can have top secret classified projects like the atomic bomb and stealth aircraft but these are often building on work and ideas existing before the project started and got classified. There's only so many experts out there and they tend to all know each other and work with each other. It really strains suspension of disbelief that a single insular clandestine entity is centuries of advancement ahead of everybody else and this is the singular work of an evil genius or two, doing stuff that nobody else can even conceive of being possible. It's not the 1800s anymore, we've moved on from the self-taught gentleman natural philosopher dabbling alone in the sciences in his basement, research is a collective effort these days.

>But somehow only Ouroboros able to make archaism and giant robots
Utter madness.

You want to build giant robots.

First you’re going to need over 9,000 tons of steel. And it needs to be milspec, not cheap shit used to make cars. Where is it from? You’ll also need glass, plastics, rubber, and several different kinds of metal.

You’ll need to get that steel to where you're manufacturing it. I guess you’ll need your own shipping company since you can't tell outsiders where your factory is.

Your factory where machine parts can be constructed, and the components assembled. You’re going to need machines that can heat and shape steel. Those systems are going to require a shipload of power, so you’re going to need a lot of generators and a huge volume of sepith. You’ll need tons of specialized cranes and heavy-lifting equipment to move that stuff around too.

You can’t just have your trucks dump all those raw materials at the loading dock and leave. You’ll need porters. You’ll need engineers trained in this kind of large-scale work. You’ll need a factory full of machinists, mechanical engineers, orbal engineers, welders, mechanics, heavy equipment operators, people to manage the power grid, and managers to keep the whole enterprise organized.

Now, if you were just hiring muscle, you could get away with hiring disaffected college dropouts. But you need trained, skilled, experienced workers, which means you’re hiring older people, with families and business connections.

It’s going to be hard enough finding the skilled labor you need to come work at your secret factory, but asking all of them to leave behind their families for an unknown period of time is absurd. They simply wouldn’t take the job. These people already live comfortable lives and make a lot of money, and they’re going to be smart and educated. You can’t lure them away from their families with money and trickery. At least, not enough of them.
>>
>>14076866
You can lure away the loners.
>>
>>14076861

>You can lure away the loners.
Assuming you can find that many loners both skilled and unskilled, you're still going to need what is basically a small town's worth of infrastructure to support them all (meaning housing, power, running water, sewage, roads, medical facilities, entertainment, law enforcement, etc etc), and you then somehow need to swear a several thousand people to total secrecy and accept total cutoff from the outside world.

And eventually somebody's going to notice that steady stream of trucks carrying raw materials, food, fuel, equipment, and personnel to your secret factory.

And of course Ouroboros doesn't have one secret factory, they apparently have thirteen of them.

Given the huge number of resources and (more importantly) people they're pulling out of civilization, it’s crazy to imagine that they could stay secret.
>>
>>14076897
>Assuming you can find that many loners both skilled and unskilled, you're still going to need what is basically a small town's worth of infrastructure to support them all (meaning housing, power, running water, sewage, roads, medical facilities, entertainment, law enforcement, etc etc), and you then somehow need to swear a several thousand people to total secrecy and accept total cutoff from the outside world.

They're automated.

We see one of the thirteen factories in Ao and it's run by one guy.
>>
>>14076925
Boy, I sure hope more than one thing doesn't go wrong in the factory at once. I especially hope that anything that goes wrong is easily diagnosed and doesn't shut production down for weeks while every part of the manufacturing process is extensively disassembled and tested to find the fault. I particularly hope that fixing the problem doesn't require some specialized part (or two) that I don't have a spare for and needs to be machined from scratch to extremely fine tolerances. I substantially hope that the fault occurred in a field that is my specialty - I can fix a mechanical fault because I am a mechanical engineer so I can fix a broken steel mill, but electrical/orbal engineering is something I only know the basics of so I can't fix a broken power plant. Computer programming fault is right out. Oh, and I singularly hope that I don't fall sick at some point and something goes wrong while I am unavailable.

Speaking of Falcom games, I mentioned I was finally gonna play this after I beat Oath in Felghana, and I just beat that a few hours ago. Trails in the Sky is just a regular JRPG, right? Is there anything I should know before I start it? It's not related to Ys in any way, is it? The chibi-style character models remind me of Ys, are they just the style Falcom uses generally?

(as an aside, Ys had some pretty /m/ enemies--that one boss in the Valestein dungeon as well as the final boss, with the engines on his arms and stuff).

Yes, it is.
It's really slow paced.
No it's not related, though Ys and Kiseki crossover games did exist.
Falcom stop using chibi design for their newer games.

Yes

The combat system is a little dated. If you want to speed up walking and combat you can use Cheat Engine's speedhack function.
If you have the OCD for it, try talking to as many NPCs as possible and talk to them again after major events occur.
Check inside empty treasure chests.
White Gehenna is an "I win" button.

Besides that one crossover game, no

If you're starting with Sky FC it's fine if you didn't know anything. The game will explain everything to you, and by everything, I mean EVERYTHING.

Try getting the books and the newspaper. They're all nice side informations.
