Maria was annoying early in the season because she was strutting around in her high-and-mighty posture and talking like she's in any position to teach Tsubasa or Hibiki lessons, was she herself was nothing but the biggest fuck-up in the whole series who was still alive. She should have been a more humble. She also jumped into the action and used the main character's gear better than the main character herself, like a goddamn fanfiction character.
All of this stopped mattering after a short while though, as she couldn't do anything else for the first half of the season because she had no gear, and in the second half everything went to shit anyway.

They're the villainous counterparts - cutting away to them hardly diminishes the role of the protagonist, especially when she's repeatedly the one central to their conflicts and eventual development.

Everyone needs to get their moment to shine, especially in a chaotic finale like G's - and even for their conflict, it was presented with the audience as outsiders until the reveal, rather than being in the head of either combatant. Having a consistent character like that is a shortcut to investing in and internalizing their motivations, and going by GX it's a shortcut that Symphogear still desperately needs.
