There's nothing wrong with calling Mazinger Z a father of the mecha genre. Granted, Tetsujin and some other stuff pre-date him, but those can be the grandfathers of the mecha genre.
Gundam can be the successful older brother that everyone knows, Eva can be the son going through his teenage years, and Gurren Lagann can be the energetic 5 year old that wants to be just like his dad when he grows up.
