Why do people say the animation was bad? I thought it was pretty good
Character animation was good.
Mecha animation was a bit cheap, though the choreography helped lessen the QUALITY effect.
It's the same with Trigun, the action choreography was good enough that I never noticed how much QUALITY there was until someone pointed it out.

When I watched it I thought it looked great because I was so captivated by the story, characters and choreography to notice all the QUALITY moments the show has.

I haven't seen too much mecha honestly, mostly Gundam, but I still think the fight choreography in 0079 is some of the (if not the) best in the series. Zeta felt a lot more dull in comparison, like it was just a lot of zooming around with mobile suits hugging in space. Like, I'll probably never forget the Black Tristars Fight from 0079. So good.

My thoughts exactly. If anything I was impressed with how brutal and straight forward the combat seemed. Maybe it was just the simplicity of it all, but watching Amuro tear a Zaku in half, or stop one with a well placed thrust through the chest, was great.

OK, I've been watching MS 08th team. MSG and this take place in the same timeframe right? How come the gundams on earth don't just autowin like Amuro does? Like he almost singlehandedly does everything in that show with no previous experience even before newtype magic but these veterans can't do half the shit he did.

because 08th was just another shitty cheap cash-in on the OYW. Just ignore the glaring plotholes and inconsistencies in it and every other OVA. That won't make them good, but they're a lot more tolerable that way.

Ground Gundams are shittier than the -78. However it doesn't excuse what we see in the show. Also Gundams can take damage to almost anything greater than 90mm so plenty of MS can still compete. Amuri was just a god because of his Newtype powers.

It ain't bad really. Though it's more the great storyboarding that stands out, not animation. As for the animation and art, there's a lot of off model art and some awkward animation that pops up, this sort of thing triggers the younger crowd.

A few notable moments aside (The Beam Javelin stock footage always sticks out because it's blatant QUALITY, and of course Doan's Island had its problems), I didn't think 0079 was so bad. Part of the problem is that most of /m/ doesn't watch any other 70s show to compare it with though.

The Gundam was made of a stronger material than the early Zeon mobile suits, so naturally it has an advantage there. As the show goes on and Zeon and the EF starts developing better MS, you can really see how the RX78-2 starts falling behind.

Those ground type Gundams are basically GM's with spare RX-78 parts bolted on, the armour was still made of luna titanium but they weren't as maneuverable as the original RX-78, plus fighting on earth in dense jungle with very difficult terrain meant they get fucked up quite often.
Repairs were also an issue since parts were limited, hence why Karen's MS had a GM head bolted on, and Ez-8 was created.
I liked it because there was a balance of power with weapons; bullets and rockets were the mainstay, tanks and bunkers were a dangerous threat, and beam weapons were "We're so fucked".

Gundam 0079 was a low budget production for the 1970s. If you want to see what good animation is like watch Conan The Future Boy. A series from the same era (came 1 year eralier than Gundam) as Gundam 0079. The difference in animation quality between the two is like night and day. Gundam 0079 has piss poor animation. Jesus, Grendizer which is a much longer mecha series has better quality than 0079. And it predates Gundam by 4 freaking years.
