Kamina's death is more important for Simon's development as a character than Gai's death for Akito's. Boson jumps also provide a convenient excuse for characters thinking someone is dead only to turn out fine afterwards.

Personally I hate Gai as part of why I hate the show: Nadesico is one of the most mean-spirited anime I've ever seen. Gai's a particularly prominent example, as he's basically the show flipping off its audience, but it's basically everywhere, from the Jovians to everything in Prince of Darkness.
