it's a plot device in LoGH - only certain areas of space are navigable by whatever engines they use, and if you veer into an un-navigable zone, your ship goes kaboom essentially.

this conceit is necessary for a lot of the plot to make sense, however, because otherwise they could just go around the 60 trillion ton liquid metal covered fortress that millions of people die trying to capture throughout the series.
