so anyone here from japan, latin america, flipland, france, etc. that managed to watch an old toku or two that is rarely referenced nowadays?

I remember watching this shit back then. In fact I wasn't able to find him until recently because I always thought his name was Poseidon. It was weird, from what I remembered he gets launched into battle through a tank or truck. And I think he fights dinosaurs.

When I was a kid, I watched a shitton of toku in VHS. I don't remember most of them.

I guess Cybercop is not really obscure, but is all I really remember that are not from a mainstream series (sentai, rider or metal heroes).

The opening is GOAT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J79Ql3Mf6Lo

There's also Lion Maru. I still wait for subs for this one.

Is that Mizuki in the middle?
>>

The one true Dinosaur Sentai.

>It was weird, from what I remembered he gets launched into battle through a tank or truck. And I think he fights dinosaurs.

Because Koseidon was a time traveller. That is why he fights Dinosaurs (and also alien colonizers and robots/cyborgs). I barely remember this show (and I was like 4 it was airing in my country)

And the truck had an auxillary flight module iirc.
>>
>>14010937
>>14011833
Unfortunately, only one episode of it got subbed. Better than nothing, I guess.
>>
>>14011815
Ichirou Mizuki? Yeah
>>
>>14011815
Yeah, he's the Commander and Sixth member of the team. He's done a couple of acting bits here and there, including some anime where he played a guy with no arms and a two minute guest spot in Dangaioh.
>>
>>14010982
I'm getting a weird sense of nostalgia from this image. I don't think I watched the series proper but I remember seeing adverts for it in my magazines as a kid. And yeah, that OP is fly as fuck.
>>
>>14012527

He actually has a really big role in Spielban, playing the main character's father.
>>

Yes same studio Tsuburaya Productions.

>>

At the least, it's best to hope that Sailor Otaku will get interested in that.
>>
>>14012704
Yeah, still I just find it weird to see Ultraman stunts in a "human scale".
>>
>>14014387

Don't feel bad about Gridman, it honestly is not a good show. People are more often than not confused because the action and designs are great yeah but those consistute minutes of an episode. The show stars some pretty bad kid actors whose characters are not all that interesting and just go through typical 90s "kid lives" plots.

No he doesn't. And I'm not looking forward to his episodes in this show.
>>
>>14018487
Yeah, looking at an episode list, Sugimura did a large amount of the bad episodes. The show's other bad writer is Asao Rumiko, but at least her episodes are sort of comedic. Sugimura's are all really awkward.

Pretty much the chief reason why no one can license Spectreman from them for official English DVD releases, sadly enough.
>>

>>
>>14011021
A toku with a knight theme sounds pretty cool, at least in concept. Did this one use Japanese footage, or was it made from scratch?
>>
>>14022939
It was all a fully original Saban production. All from scratch.
>>
>>14019271
The only thing I've seen him in is Onimusha and the movie Space Travelers, which is a pretty good comedy about bank robbers and their hostages bonding over a cheesy old anime.
>>
>>14022954
Gotta go track that down, it sounds gloriously cheesy.
Never heard about an American tokusatsu show made from scratch before (and before people get mad at me, I did not grow up with American kids' TV in the 90s, so a lot of this is new to me).
>>
>>14022939
>A toku with a Knight theme
I think I have the show for you Anon
>>
>>14022939
All original it was Saban's attempt at making a toku style show without having to use sentai footage but no one bought the toys and it was canceled while they were working on season 2
>>
>>14022974
Garo looks a bit too dark and CGI-heavy for me, from what little I've seen. Keep in mind, I'm a dumb noob.
>>
>>14022970
I haven't seen it either but I imagine it is.

It's an oddity. Specially coming from Saban. The sad, and kind of ironic, thing about it is that Saban cancelled the production of a second season to focus on more Power Rangers.
>>
>>14022981
Explains why I've never heard of it, or why all-original American tokusatsu never really became a thing.

>>
>>14023009
Hm, I think the main reason why I haven't even considered the Batman TV show as a tokusatsu (although technically it kinda is one), is because it was actually fully aware of how camp and silly it was, while Japanese superhero shows from that era and the next few decades always take themselves super seriously.

>>14022551

>>
>>14018335

Basically the same, swap out "90s Japanese kid issues" for "90s American kid stories". Also the bad guy's story is more or less the same and somehow the American series ran 10 episodes longer.
>>
>>14024586
Also, the bad guy is voiced by Tim Curry
>>
>>14024586
>>14024592
This must have been DIC's easiest localization job ever. At least Gridman has an actual ending, right?
>>
>>14012527
>>14012591
He also had a minor role in Go-Busters, as the inventor of mid-season upgrade. And he had a cameo in Kamen Rider W as the judge on a music contest.
>>
>>14022627
Well either someone owns those properties or they are public domain. The show doesn't just disappear.
>>
>>14022983
There's a lot of CG but even in the first season it's pretty well-done for the time. There's still a fuckton of actual stunts. Only they dropped the ball on the 3rd series and basically removed the whole "suit actor" element from it, but thankfully they realized that it sucked and came back to using stuntmen in plastic suits.
>>
>>14024657
Is it as grimdark as it looks? Because I like my tokus somewhat silly and lighthearted, for the most part.
>>
>>14024702
Yeah, actually. Like it's still fun what with dudes in crazy costumes fighting cgi monsters and rubber costumes and shit but the story itself is pretty damn dark
>>
>>14024641
I thought he also voiced one of the mechs
>>
>>14024799
Eh, I'll giving a go. I assume starting from the first series is the best way?
>>
>>14024702

The dark tends to be balanced out by the style and cuhrayzee that happens on a regular basis.
>>
>>14022529
I remember saw a video in Nicovideo where there's a scene in an episode of Tiger Seven when the guy jumps from his motorcycle to transform. And the unmanned Motorcycle just keeps on moving and hits a child who is crossing the road.

It was weird.

They showed Koseidon here in Flipland. I thought he was a diver guy fighting ancient dinosaurs.

The way it was dubbed was kind of incomprehensible for me but then again I was a wee little lad at the time.

Yeah, it's comedic in tone. The main character is a private detective strapped for cash. He once disguised as a woman for a mission and other slapstick moment like the time he mistook a banana for his transformation item. Sadly I didn't watch all the episode when it was aired in my country.
>>
>>14027083
I've heard that at least one Garo show has actual porn stars in it, so I'm prepared. Also I'm European, we have bare tits in the comics in newspapers.
>>
>>14018287
The one subbed episode that you used to could find was good. The villain was actually creepy.
>>
>>14027154
I think it's episode 7-ish or something that the villain of the week is played by a porn star. But there's boobs right in episode 1.

It never gets to Game of Thrones level of absurdity though, just a couple times in each series. Except the 3rd series where clearly they wanted to to be edgier.
>>
>>14024702
It takes itself too seriously. There are moments in the first and second series that I laugh at what I wasn't meant to because of how damn serious everyone is. (doesn't help that most of the cast don't have the chops for these roles)

I still find it really weird that someone decided to license and sub Super Robot Red Baron. I mean, I don't mind that they did, but still.
>>
>>14027746
BCI Eclipse were the saviors that the Western licensing world needed, but not the one they deserved. Plus it makes it that much easier for someone to release the whole show online without having to do it from scratch (lord knows why no one but Starseeker decided to do it though).

I wish that Mach Baron would be done though, if only to point and laugh at the villain's hairdo.

Actually only Solbrain did. In fact I remember two traumatizing episodes:
-Kid goes to a building when she thought her "mother" was calling for her, Building starts getting auto-destroyed, when they finally get to the said "mother" she was a incomplete android, episode ends with kid hanging out with SolDozer
-the 3-parter where the Winspector team comes back (at that time, I was not sure where these 3 came from), Said enemy in the 3-parter was a form-shifting android that started as a kid, then a lady, then finally a middle-aged man; said enemy kills himself driving towards a dead-end
