It's mostly an OAV thing. The recent STRAIT JACKET anime was pretty horrific, but a one-shot. The BLUE SEED series had oodles of giant insectoid ickieness, TERRAFORMERS is not for the squeamish, and the GARO anime series matched the live-action originals with dark deeds.
It's definitely an OVA thing. Iczer One might be something to look at. Not so much horror as "ugly aliens that actually kill people and the lighting's pretty dark most of the time", but you might like it.

For anime i would recommend Blue gender the first 2 episodes of Total Eclipse and the first episode of Iczer 1.

Well Anno always loved the Kaiju in Ultraman and felt guilty about rooting for them to get beaten up, so it makes sense that a lot of the Agnels are what he would find cute.
