17 episodes in and it's just awkward 'romance', poor writing, filler episodes, and not nearly enough mecha.
Why do people like this?

I enjoy the development of the world and the characters residing in that world for the first 24 episodes and then the action packed slide of the second half. Anime is good, sound is great, the dub is pleasant. I do cringe at the filler, but this series is always a yearly watch for me.
E7 isn't for everyone. If you aren't really into it, you don't need to force yourself through watching the next 33 episodes.
I tried watching it after all the hype. I dropped it at episode 33. It felt like the show people mock NGE for being, when that is a far better show with better characterisation.
This show is full of whiney people who do 180s every other episode.
