Her rivalry with Fumina was pretty cute and felt genuine, it just needed a bit more developing. In contrast, Shia was one of the worst rivals ever only second to her brother in how utterly uninteresting and half assed she was presented.

Also Fumina was a waste of a character slot. She has no personality other than "YAY GUNPLA!" and mild jealousy of other girls being around Jegan Howe. Gyanko, Shimon, Lucas, Minato, absolutely anyone in Try would have been a more compelling protagonist than Team Try Fighters (except maybe Lady Meijin).
The single biggest thing missing from Try was a total balls-out Gundam nerd like Sei, and Gyanko is the only one who comes close.

I'm not saying she's a masterpiece of character study, but at least she was clearly a fan of Mobile Suit Gundam. She tooled around in a Zeon-inspired school uniform, she got offended when people insulted the Gyan, and she verbally referenced the show. No one else in Try even seemed like a fan of the franchise at all, everyone was just a gunpla battle enthusiast. China's little brother and Minato were just all about their model building technical skills. Fumina was nothing but "I want to win the tournament!". Shimon was "I want my kid brother to see me win the tournament". Everyone else was just a blank slate who wanted to win a video game tournament. Other than Ral, only Gyanko actually gave a fuck about the show.

They're all fine, but are all lessened due to pure-boy needing some level of harem antics because he's the MC. We could have had Fumina as the main character that's stuck feeling like she has to be typical meek gundam girl support fighter, and have Gyanko being her rival simply to pressure her to fight and build more to her strengths as an aggressive assault fighter, which is what Star Winning plays to. And, we do see this happen, but the MC choice was someone who was a dull pick, IMO.
