How did your love for mecha get started?
I fell in love with giant robots when I got this for my seventh birthday.
I was a sick 4 year old I'm Minnesota who had to stay inside due to fatal respiratory problems. I would watch Power Rangers and Masked Rider, and other stuff. then followed Beast Wars, Medabots, Gundam (M.S)
From the minds of mortal man came the mightiest of machines
I had absolutely no knowledge about the thing whatsoever, watched Code Gayass, thought mecha was nice, watched other mecha shows, thought Code Gayass wasn't that nice after all but still a decent gateway, continued to watch mecha anime to satisfy my raging boner for steel and chrome and scopedog noises.

My gateway was Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2, no jokes. Thought the characters and story were interesting and gave MSG a try. And here I am now, trying to complete all shows featured in SRW.

Gerry Anderson shows and old 2000AD Comics my father gave me.
Then I saw Gundam Wing on Cartoon Network around 1999-2000 and was hooked for life.
Trawling around the internet looking for SNES roms back in high school I discovered SRW4.
Some of the things looked neat so I started looking things up as I (very haphazardly) brute forced my way through the game.
Found out it was some kinda anime crossover game, and I started trying to find the shows in it.
After see a couple I got hooked on the whole concept of giant robots and was reborn as a /m/an.

Cubix. I haven't been able to find any traces of the toy that I had as a kid(it had a motorcycle mode, none of the ones around or mentioned do such), but I got one of the toys when it first showed up in America. It of course disappeared 5 months later(the show and my toy; I honestly started to believe the shit didn't exist until I saw mention of it in a thread) and the rest is robohistory.
Fuck Battletech haters. MechWarrior 2 is still the greatest.

Rebellion was pretty good. R2 was Rebellion all over again though, almost literally, because of bullshit plot devices. I didn't actually realize there was a difference until later. I saw R2 on Adult Swim, and was confused when I started to rewatch the series.
My first taste was from Beast Wars as a kid along with some hand-me-down Voltron toys.
Neither that or shows on Toonami really got me into it though until I watched Mobile Suit Gundam as an adult.
I had this weird thing going on.
All my favorite things as a kid were beetleborgs, power rangers, medabots G-gundam and wing and other mech stuff.
Now as an adult my favorite anime are Gaogaigar and gurren lagann and I really like SRW, despite only having played J.
I never realized untill recently that I liked all that stuff, because they were /m/ stuff.
So now I am going through some /m/ training.

I think the realization that you're a mecha fan is just a gradual process. It definitely took me a long time to realize I liked mecha as a thing, rather than just a bunch of stuff that just so happened to be mecha.
As far back as I can remember I was sitting in the living room watching Power Rangers or Beast Wars.
Watching G Gundam and Transformers with my dad when I was little probably played a big part

For me, it was Transformers and Gundam.
I was especially into them because of the toys.
My mom would buy me Gundam figures when I'd get A's since they were like 7 dollars.
I wish I still had them all, but I'd take them apart and mix them up to make my own gundams; so, a lot of them got lost and broken.
Playing SRW J because some of my online friends were getting into SRW as well basically awakened a dormant love for mecha that I had built up when I was younger with stuff like Power Rangers and games like the original Armored Core and Gundam vs Zeta Gundam.

Aoki Ryusei SPT layzner got me into mecha officially when it was still subbed.
Got this when I was six. Little later I started watching Star Blazers and Force Five.
Stuff like Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, Lost in Space, Black Hole, Dr Who, Six Million Dollar Man and even Lost Saucer all contributed to my robot love.

I bought a knockoff Brave toy from a street vendor when I was 6. Had to pick between it, the flesh-pink Batman and the bubble hoops game, and I think I made the right choice. I just kept buying bootlegs until I got older, and now I buy the official stuff for nearly 3 times as much.
Sometimes I wish I could go back to my old house and rifle through my old stuff just to see if I could match the bootlegs to shows I've seen since then.

Catching re-runs of Voltron on TV as a kid. Didn't really know it was anime until I was older around the time stuff like Sailor Moon and Ronin Warriors began airing.

Probably Zone of the Enders HD collection was announced but I didn't get that far into it until I watched 00 around 2014ish. I always had a thing for Transformers though.
This piece of shit, though Transformers: The Movie is where "love" became "obsession".
Evangelion was my gateway mecha, and the first anime series I'd ever watched. And the explicitly /m/ aspects were a huge part of that; it was thrilling to see visceral combat in a mechanical form. I guess, in a way, all mecha is bio-mecha. All robots have something organic inside, even if only metaphysically. Mecha brings humanity and life back into the machine.
Within the year before I watched Eva, I watched some dubbed Godzilla films. Two of my favorites were the Heisei Mechagodzilla and Spacegodzilla, especially thanks to MOGUERA and its pilots. I should've known by then, but it took Eva to make me want more. Now I've watched all of Gundam, Macross, Patlabor (sans TNG) and Ghost in the Shell.
I watched Robotech and Voltron as a toddler. Later I watchedPower Rangersand Beast Wars, and then the Toonami Gundams. I also loved Star Trek and the Cameron Terminators as a kid.
first ever mech show i watched were super sentai ones. now that i think about it, how the fuck did my third world country afford the license to air and even change the dubbing of the OP songs for each one? it was bioman and fiveman. watching giant robots punching giant monsters was awesome as a kid
Transformers, Voltron, and Power Rangers were all on TV when I was a little kid. There's never really been a time in my life where I didn't think robots are cool, it's more a matter of degree.

I watched Power Rangers Lightspeed when I was younger and loving the Megazord fight scenes. From there I watched FLCL when I was seven and played Quake 2 all when I was seven (which was around 2003). To this day, I still think FLCL is the best /m/ anime I've ever saw (Neon Genesis Evangelion was really good, but Shinji's whining at the beginning turned me off a little).
