None of these comparisons work, nor indeed can they work. The franchises are built on totally different models.
Every installment of Macross has a lasting impact on the progression of the franchise because it is all the same setting. Half of Gundam is off in alternate universes doing their own thing before they get dropped for not being UC Gundam, and the rest are UC Gundam and thus have no progression because Zeon is the Neverending Story.
So what is your metric of comparison? Tone of the show? Fan reception? Day of the week that the first episode aired, accounting for leap years and measuring from distance from Sunday?

Plus not only revisited Macross city, but inverted the love triangle (2 guys fighting over a woman) but also the role of music in the story (music is the tool of the enemy this time, not what saved the world but what almost destroys it).
This is in direct contrast to 7, where Music saves the galaxy but the guy who uses it is sort of an asshole. 7 also takes basically all of the technology and planes of plus and makes those common, with the exception of the Ghost which is still in the can for being too dangerous to trust. The Jenius family being on the rocks but being unwilling to admit it because they know that they are an important symbol in galaxy-wide human/Zentradi relations is also a surprisingly neat look at exploring the themes of the post-war arc of SDF, where culture ended the war but the conflict endures.
Zero takes the lore we were given in 7 about how and more importantly why the protoculture made humanity and other races like it, and uses that as the setup for the Birdman. The Birdman is just a failsafe to make sure that the nonviolent space future that the dying protoculture race want to come about after the Zentradi would actually happen. Obviously, as a prequel, the impact of previous Macross shows here is a bit less direct, but Focker shows up again and that's always cool.
Zero also introduces Fold Quartz and protoculture/Vajra imagery that makes a re-appearance in Frontier, the fold quartz in specific being very important to the plot. We also have a bloodline return in the form of the Nome family. Zero and Frontier are probably the two most directly linked shows in the Macross timeline, even. Also, the Ghost from 7 finally makes a return as a main battle unit, with restraints on it.
These are not just references, like Ozma naming his battle formations after Fire Bomber songs. These are major set pieces and themes that build up throughout the franchise.

You had multiple returning characters from the original series as major characters, everyone constantly talks about the events of SDF, and Lynn Minmay having ended Space War One with music is the foundation of Basara's entire character and the motivation for all of his actions throughout the show.
