Theorietically, yes. However, That ultimately isn't true considering Gundam has multiple universes. Also despite your argument which is only accountable based on physical scale, Gundam's Universal Century is far more fleshed out, and ultimately is bigger for a consumer perspective.

As I said earlier Macross isn't a fleshed out universe it's easy to not retcon when you have a timeline full of open space.

I'd agree if we were talking about mechencial designt, but we're talking about mech design. Valkaries are extremely pleasing planes, however, outside of 7, I don't find the appealing mechs.

To be fair, the stuff in Macross are pretty small-scale, they just move to other places occasionally.
Frontier mostly takes place around the colony fleet. Plus is just that facility testing the prototypes until the end where they rushed to Earth. 7, again, mostly the fleet until near the ending.

MSG actually was cancelled and had to have a shortened ending. And the show itself only became popular as a result of reshowings of the MSG film trilogy becoming popular.
And SDFM stole a shitload of pages from MSG's story. It was, in fact, originally conceived and developed as a parody of MSG. Part way through development they decided they had enough material to make a run at a serious show, but you can still see a lot of Gundam in Macross. And everything after SDFM was floating rocks, song energy, fold bugs, ancient demons, etc in a downward spiral of bad ideas.

It's well-drawn for a TV show and they were trying, but the relationships were half-assed and the heart of the drama is way too messy. Last time we had Minmei become a human failure, but this time it was the main character (laugh). Personally I like both series, but as another poster said it's kinds apples and oranges. There hasn't been nearly as much Macross material so you don't get as many wild swings in quality.

I'm in a weird boat when it comes to Macross vs Gundam.
I used to like both, but the more Gundam I watched, the more I hated Gundam. When I had only watched the original and a couple of AU's, it felt unique and interesting. But the more I watched the Gundam cataloge, the more I was forced to realize that Gundam had two ideas and one plot, and somehow they have stretched that out into a 35 year franchise.
Any individual Gundam show can be good, but taken as a whole Gundam gets so incredibly stale that it retroactively destroys what enjoyment I ever had in it. Where there was once fun, now all I have is bitterness.
Macross, on the other hand, manages to include music, transforming mecha, and a mandatory love triangle in every single show they make and still feel like they are doing different shit every time. They have never fought the same enemy twice (unlike trotting out the Zeon horse for the 10th time) our main characters rarely extend beyond the show they were in, and each show focuses on new themes and frontiers instead of remaining mired in different variations of the same setting.
I think its because Gundam made the mistake of revisiting the same watering hole too much in their first few sequels, and now they are not allowed to escape it. Even in their AU's, it took 30 years before they could so much as toy with the idea of a conflict that wasn't Earthmans vs Spacemans, and people are still salty that Trailblazer had aliens in it because its 'not how Gundam is supposed to work'. Even in an alternate universe that has nothing to do with UC, anything that isn't a copy of the One Year War is bad.

You could make an argument that exploring variations on a theme can show nuance and depth, with each AU revisiting the same basic conflict putting their own spin on it.
I'm not going to do that, though, because the AUs that copied the UC most closely were the worst ones.
