Well I just started Macross. Currently on episode 4 and enjoying it so far.
I had no idea the bad guys were giant aliens and it surprised the shit out of me when I realized the dude who crawled out of that puny looking walker mech was fucking huge. At first I thought perspective was weird.
What am I in for? Any other series like this and 0079? I watched Zeta and didn't like it so much.
Currently on Episode 20 myself. SDF has not so far disappoint, and It's cool to see the show that BattleTech artists drew inspiration (stole?) from. Plus it has a Speed Racer feel to it that I can dig.
Can't wait to watch RoboTech :)
It's good until ep 29 when they were forced to tack on a shitty epilogue

Some things about the epilogue are cool.
I mean, it's kinda like having a sidestory tacked on, in some ways.
I think of it as having a bit of 0083 mixed in with my 0079, if that makes any sense. It's what happens after the finale, and that aspect is interesting.

SDF Macross is a little goofy in a 30's pulp sci-fi sort of way. The Giant Green aliens is pretty weird.
The movie is absolutely essential. It's really gorgeous.

If you like Macross and 0079 maybe you'd like Fang of the Sun Dougram. It's long and very slow at times but it's got some really cool stuff going on. And it's kind of a spiritual predecessor of Armored Trooper VOTOMS, you can see how themes and ideas that come up in Dougram influenced VOTOMS in a lot of ways.

Not really. Its explained in the series, but the Zentradi don't know how to innovate or repair their stuff. They've got real power armor, but they can't make anymore, and the pods are their best effort.

Mech scenes are actually well done (compare to 3 years older Gundam), characters scenes suffer a bit from this.
DYRL is top notch though, ensure to watch it after completing SDF.

I had the same experience, had no clue what happens in macross except "music, mechs love story" and the zentradi made me so hyped. 7 and Frontier are good too.Some gundams are great, I like ZZ better than Zeta
