A few months back we had a nice little thread about this series of novels and their live action, anime, and manga adaptations.
The legendary real life Japanese robot, Gakutensoku makes an appearance early in the series: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gakutensoku
The series has an antagonist whose appearance was the inspiration for Capcom's M. Bison, too. His name's Kato, and he wants to make Tokyo into rubble.
I figured I would start this up again and include some links of interest:

It appears there will be an English scanslation of the manga soon: http://hoxtranslations.(blog with a spot).ca/2016/02/some-thoughts-on-adaptation-sangokushi.html
For the record, this is Kato. His character design is very influential.
The author was also responsible for translating alot of western fantasy like Lovecraft, Conan the Barbarian and Dunsany.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I wish someone would return the favor and get his work in English. I'll take the manga adaptations even.
Too bad the original novels are untranslated.
>>13993453
If the manga gets scanslated, I'll be happy. That will be enough for me.
>>13993453
Books without drawings are for faggots anyway.
>>13993453
Honestly if they were translated, it would require a big glossary in the back to explain shit since this is a series deeply rooted in understanding Japanese culture.
Also I wish someone would buy and tip the BDs so the subs could be attached. I have the money but my computer doesn't have a bd drive.
>>13995322
>tip
Rip*
Apparently a lot of people got hurt making the first movie, which ties into a very, VERY long string of incidents involving Taira no Masakado. Seriously look it up, this guy's grave may be the closest thing we have to proof if curses.
>>13995322
I didn't know the Bluray's had english subs... interesting... might have to save up for those.
Tokyo: The Last War has yet to be fansubbed.
>>13995719
No I meant someone should rip it and slap on the official subs
>>13992749
>they lost Gakutensoku while touring in Germany
I call bullshit. How do you "lose" something that big? It was either stolen or something happened to it.
>>13996538
Same way you lose luggage on a flight. Shipping error
>>13995901
But the Bluray has English subs, right?
>>13998026
No idea
>>13998052
OK, because while The Last Megalopolis has been fansubbed....The Last War hasn't... So no subs for that to "put over" the bluray rip.
I would kill to have these translated and brought over with these Amano covers.
>>13998087
>OK, because while The Last Megalopolis has been fansubbed
I thought we got an official dvd release and that's where the subs come from
I'm told some really out there shit happens in the books. Like Kato curses FDR with polio because he would've ended WW2 peacefully, and when Truman takes over he drops the bombs on Japan which is what Kato wants.
And stuff like Kato is revealed to not be human at all, he'sone of the ancient oni from japanese mythology, and he wants to destroy the seat of the emperor's power in revenge for the genocide of his ancestors
>>14000472
It did, it's where we got the title Tokyo The Last Megalopolis from. In Japan basically every adaptation of the books is just called Teito Monogatari.
>>14000472
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo:_The_Last_Megalopolis
In 2003, ADV Films released a proper subtitled DVD edition of the film to the North American market.
Maybe that's where the subs come from.
It doesn't look like Tokyo: The Last War has received a release in the US at all. Maybe the japanese bluray has english subs, but who knows.
>>14002504
The Last War never left Japan.
>>14002504

Google translate on this page doesn't reveal anything about English subtitles for the Bluray set. Bummer. Doesn't look like it has them.
>>14002504
>check the subbed dvd on amazon
>70 bucks
Fuck that
>>14002536
I don't think it's actually subbed, though. The description says nothing about English subs. Unless they are so common on Japanese releases that they don't put that in the production description.
>>14002691
The dvd, not the bd.

Why are you worried about that? It's out there subbed digitally already. Worry about the sequel, The Last War.
The Last Megalopolis is right here:

It would be nice to watch it in even slightly higher resolution than 360p
Wasn't Kato the bad guy in that Takashi Miike children's movie The Great Yokai War?
>>14002799
Yep. That's a spin off of this series, apparently.
>>14002828
But not very violent or scary, as you would normally expect from Miike's works (though it IS bizarre). I'd argue that it's even more kid-friendly than his Yatterman movie.
>>13995249
The are different manga adaptations though, and together only adapt 4 books at most of eleven(or twelve?)
>>14003222
Damn. That's too bad. But I guess it's better than nothing.
Still, I'll hold out hope that the novels will be translated at some point.
>>14002828
The most EVIL recycler ever
>>14005270
Does Kato have environmental issues in the Miike movie?
>>13996538
He was taken down by the crew in a hospital, while being mind controlled by a VR game.
>>14005382
Kato in it hates humans for destroying everything in their path in the name of progress.
So he captures innocent yokai and uses the discarded junk of humanity to turn them into metal monsters like pic related to destroy Tokyo.
>>14007372
Cool! I'll have to download this sucker. It's a shame the only way we can really experience the series with english translations is through live action and animated productions.
