Did Watanabe want to say that Spike would have been better of if he just stayed with Faye instead of chasing the past ?
Spike essentially put his life and existence on pause when he left the syndicate and Julia, and has been living day to day as a man with no past, or future, just drifting. So...it's like he's been dreaming.
But eventually he had to wake up, because he couldn't leave his past behind forever. Even if he could, he'd still be "dreaming" and not really be alive because deep down his past wouldn't stop beckoning him back to play out as intended.
