Otherwise she's kill.

Except a pretty big point about 0079, especially for its time, was how the antagonists didn't have to be moustache-twirlingly evil and while Gihren fulfilled that role you had Garma, Ramba, those Zeek coolguys that almost managed to bomb the Gundam's joints with hovertrucks, Dozle as a family man willing to sacrifice himself for his men and even Degwin as an old tired guy whose favorite son died and was 100% done with the war.

Carta's death was such a waste of a death tho. I felt for her far more than I did for Mika killing her. Mika is just an autist, nothing ellicits any emotions from him so it's just meaningless and boring and a waste of a shot at some sort of closure for the viewer. As it is, she just died, and nothing was resolved for her, Mika, the viewer, Gaelio, McGillis, or anyone. She might as well just have been a mook of something. Not even her penchant for duels and "honor in battle" and such silliness got decompressed. It was all just grunts and Mika's regurgitated, repetitive, overused autism-lines.

It wasn't bad, but it wasn't even good, when it could have been great. Just empty and directionless. It could have been made meaningful at least from the pov of Carta, but it wasn't because they wanted to insist on the Mika cryptic-autism point that they've been underscoring since ep.2
A waste of a good, convincingly conflicted character's death.

What got me about Mika is that he somehow pulled Orga out of his funk just by being a fucking autist with ridiculous bloodlust. It's like if you read a short character description of Setsuna and just made a new character based on that.

>even in death I will kill kids
>>
>>13990522
Well yeah, that and that he just treats Carta like any other grunt. But she isn't any other grunt, she's the named commander who killed Biscuit. It *should* have been meaningful for Mika. But fine, let's say he's an autist, it could have been made meaningful in some other ways, for Carta possibly. Heck, it could even have been meaningful in it's meaninglessness (if you want to make some sort of point in that vein), but instead it was truly generic, with Mika just being the same repetitive sperglord he's been for the whole season now. It was a waste.

And yeah, the Orga thing didn't work very well for me either. The whole episode was like they were trying to make some sort of point of how "making it" in life requires you to be heartless and ruthless or something like that, but it didn't feel heavy on the shoulders of the characters, because they were all acting like sociopaths rather than like people grinding their way through something tough.

So, I guess if the message is "being ambitious means you should be sociopathic" it sorta works as a standalone episode? It jives wrong with the rest of the series tho.
>>
>>13990292
From next episode preview it seems he might be able to kill kids this time.
Worth that installation I guess.
>>
>>13990666
It was meaningful for Mika though, he didn't even wait for Orga to give the order, he just got straight out into combat and killed everyone as fast and hard as he could. He was obviously angrier than usual, even through his mask of blank-faced autism. I think the point of it was to show that they've been kicked around for too long and have lost a certain amount of their humanity - the next episode or two will probably have them realise they've gone too far in some way.

You raise a good point about 'making it' in life requiring you be sociopathic, but it could be a case of saying that if you build your system and society so that it requires sociopathy to be successful then when those kids you've been beating around turn up on your doorstep they won't want a duel, they'll want to kill you and be done with it.
>>
>>13990193
Yup. Gaelio was a cocktease, Carta is the real Garma.
>>
>>13990694

It's a little late for that whole "we've gone too far we need to reflect on this" considering they only have a couple of episodes left. Any sort of development in that regard is going to feel rushed.
>>
>>13990694

Mika got angry when he heard Carta's voice. There was a shot in the fight showing him do so as he heard her, presumably because he recalled that voice killing Biscuit. Orga backs down from the fight at the first chance despite Mika telling him Biscuit wanted them all to go to Mars together. If the episode has a moral it's not to go sociopathic and that Mika was the one in the wrong for doing so.
>>
>>13990487
That's the fucking point. You're not supposed to like it. It's a show about kids piloting death machines ostensibly to right a wrong in a decadent and unfair world, but who are really driven by the need to be someone and find purpose in their lives. Tekkadan is essentially a proto Black Panther street gang shooting the police in order to get MLK and JFK to the Democratic Convention.

The situation is complex and whoever's the good guy depends on your perspective and the scope with which you view the events.
>>
If we don't get at least one shot of Ein's mutilated torso plugged into a bunch of machines, I'm going to be more upset than I already probably will be.
>>
>>13990694
That is the point I wish they would get to but I feel it will never come to full fruitition. Tekkedan are populated with child monsters, all killers at their core. Gjall helped to create through the society they basically created the thing that may be their undoing.
>>
>>13990694
I think that cheapens the overarching themes of Gundam tho (and what has been presented as the themes of this very series so far as well). War is not horrible for sociopaths. Even Kudelia seemed like genuinely monstrous, being all serene and whatnot at the cost of their choices. That message works on scenarios with a much larger scale but, as is, it just dehumanizes your characters and justifies (even excuses) the deaths, rather than lament them. "Biscuit died in the pursuit of our righteous goal" becomes less of a tragedy and more of a simple, straightforward cost-benefit analysis "that's too bad but, eh! what can you do amirite?". Even the speech by Orga sounded just like what some opportunistic politician who cared nothing about the lives their crusade has cost them would say.

And, again, maybe that's the point you want to make, but I'm skeptical that it is, because you could have made it much better if you had, for instance, used Carta differently and more deliberately. Therefore, so far I think this line of analysis really is just me reading way too much into it to try and find some meaning to the narrative choices, which are seeming more and more like blunders instead.

I don't know about the "waiting for Orga's order" either. And, again, if they wanted to show Mika angry, there are about a zillion better (and more satisfying) ways to do it than with some weird may-or-may-not-be ambiguity.
>>
>>13990716
>The situation is complex and whoever's the good guy depends on your perspective and the scope with which you view the events.
People actually believe this.
>>
You know am I wrong in originally having wanted this series to basically be not only shorter, but a slasher movie in disguise, where Mika is the Jason and the victims are basically every Gundam stereotype out there? Like... I never expected any of this personality I'm seeing people complain about from Mika, I thought he was supposed to be Pacman basically (with even less of a personality). Just this...thing thats there to shut these walking stereotypes the fuck up. After multiple series' of these melodramatic protags I thought it would have been a bit of brief catharsis. Hell if anything, I'm mad this series trying so hard to be more dramatic than it actually is is getting in the way of Mika being just that.

Fuck, I hope he smashes Totally-Not-Char in the most anti climactic way before any of his schemes have a chance to do anything.

So yeah, there's a lot about this series I haven't been fond of but I've never expected more or less from Mika himself. He's a walking plot gimmick more than a character and its one of the very few things this series has been consistent about.
>>
We're going to end up with the latest model of Jesus Yamato for the next series, just mark my words.
>>
>>13990733
I think that point could be made, but if so then play up the point of Carta's gallantry expectations more, and make a point of Mika despising them. Instead it's all left in the air without any clue as to what's going through anyone's minds, because Mika acting like a crazy sociopathic soldier is not new, and not particularly different against Carta than against anyone else. And if you had indeed actually made that point rather than just maybe-possibly-suggesting it, then when Gaelio inevitably raises it you're more emotionally invested in the plight of Carta/Gaelio/Gjallarhorn or the pain of Tekkadan or the unfairness of it all.
>>
>>13990773
>Just this...thing thats there to shut these walking stereotypes the fuck up.
Kudelia is still alive, so he's doing a crummy job at doing that.

But 'dumb' misses out a lot of the context that she believes highly in honour and is naive in war, which leads to her downfall, and calling Mika an autistic child is mostly accurate but misses out at least some subtlety. There is a character under there, just not much of it. More like the potential for one if anything.

>fight

I actually love the Tekkaden kids being more bloodthirsty, the predictable goodie two shoe expectations of so many in this board can kiss my ass its what I've wanted from this series from the beginning. It was supposed to be a breath of fresh air from the at times sheer agonizingly patronizing vibe from most Gundam series, especially more recent ones. (that this series has sinfully tried to maintain via Kudelia, in a really clumsy way.)

That said though, the whole thing with revealing a characters' backstory and motivations right before killing them off, while certainly not new to IBO, is definitely bad storytelling especially if its being done so consistently.

I'm all for a non-heroic, anti-hero set of protagonists but this series has definitely had a n identity crisis for a good portion of it.
>>
>>13990782

Mikazuki literally spells out his motivation last episode. He said that he won't stop until he and Orga gets to "their place", i.e. he has decided that it doesn't matter how many people he kills, as long as it manages to take him and Orga to a better place/life.

They've been doing nasty shit all their lives in order to be able to live on a day-to-day basis. Mikazuki saw Kudelia as a big break that will finally allow them to finally live a peaceful and secure life, so he's willing to massacre a bunch of people for her and Orga.
>>
>>13990842
I agree, and I think part of the problem is this shift to bloodthirst mode, especially for Mika, is coming too late to be relevant. It needed to happen a couple of episodes ago to give time for them to really become demons, realise this and actually form a coherent response to it. As it is, they're probably going to shove in a 'they get even worse - they realise this - they repent and turn good again' all in the space of two episodes.

Is it edgy anonymous? Just wanting every now and then for the pretentiousness that bleeds out of these Gundam series' every damn time to get just taken down a notch for a bit? Especially after multiple series' of particularly melodramatic drama queens in flashy, colorful outfits monologue'ing for episodes at a time? Would that have been so bad?

Its all a moot point though because whatever I thought it might have been when this started, it ended up being more of that really.

There's a reason a bunch of nations have conventions from time to time to write out some things called 'war crimes'. And that's ignoring that commanders used to have meetings all the time prior to a battle back in the day without the opposing side shooting an arrow into their neck. Even now, military leaders with sufficient authority get taken to court to surrender rather than just exterminated.

Yes, Thunderbolt. There wasn't shit left of Ein, and Ein is happy about this. It greatly undermines the personal tragedy of the situation - however, it reinforces the greater tragedy of the series where someone is totally cool with this happening.

>>13991039
>I dunno. There's like, honor and the rules of engagement etc...and then there's wannabe victorian atristocrats trying to fight a modern war.
Problem is that Gjallarhorn are a global organization of wannabe victorian aristocrats who haven't had to fight anyone. Probably a few skirmishes with pirates and some rogue Teiwaz affiliates on the fringes, but nothing too substantial. These aren't some out-of-touch elites blindly stepping into the battlefield, instead it's a set of elites who are finding themselves entirely mismatched against opponents who fight like nothing they've seen in centuries.

>>
>>13991026

Yeah, see, the Geneva Convention and having enough sense not to shoot vehicles marked with red crosses and troops with white flags is a bit different to someone thinking it's fucking medieval times - especially Carta, who outright fucking saw what a monster Mika was beforehand and what he did to her men even before he just threw honor to the wind and reduced them to paste outside of their mobile suits - and challenging them to a one-on-one duel, completely ignoring that she just killed one of their people.

What in the actual shit was Carta even thinking?

Which is a theme I actually love, I'm always for deconstructing flash and pomp in war in fiction if its done well. Its always interesting when similar "Reality checks" like that happen in real history too for me. For all this series' faults, it was one thing I was hoping to see a lot more of.

A fair concession, but securing footholds on Earth and laying waste to armies, no matter how inept they may be, still manages to place itself above expecting a fair fight out of a gaggle of hardened killers, after you employed overwhelming force to try and kill them previously.
>>
the problem with Mikazuki's attitude is that if you treat your enemies with such brutality, when the day comes where you need to surrender, your enemy will likely reciprocate.

The SS and the Japs themselves got a reputation for brutality and war crimes so the allies rarely took them prisoner, opting instead to execute them on the spot.
>>

>>

>Life is supposed to make sense
>Life is a story made to make you feel fulfilled
Mhm. It doesn't occur to you that this is the point? Biscuit's death unhinged Tekkadan. The only story that makes sense to them is vengeance and an accomplished mission. Outside of that, honor doesn't matter. Fairness doesn't matter. How the enemy feels, whether or not they can stop bloodshed by negotiating with the enemy? Doesn't matter. On some level, your humanity kicked in and you thought, "Fuck, Carta didn't deserve that. We know her perspective and she actually has some pathos behind her." But that's from our perspective as viewers. And that's if you don't recognize Tekkadan's actions as just in the greater scheme. In fact, you're reacting emotionally to one death when it was the death of someone who supported a destructive regime, one who her killers aim to reform.

So, again, who's right in this scenario?

The law of war is a strange thing. How likely are the generals of the winning side to be put in trial for what they've done to win? How likely is it that the laws are written loosely enough to allow for "interpretation?" I sit in on actual courses for actual professional who actually advise and litigate this sort of thing. What's drilled into their heads? "The law of war is not a suicide pact." You don't have to fight "fair". You don't have to meet knives with knives and guns with guns. You don't have to stand in a line and shoot at each other.

People mistake what actual war actually means. You're allowed to trick your opponent. You're allowed to do low down dirty shit that ends with your enemy bleeding out wondering what happened. The things you can't do, you actually have to punish people for later (Saddam stayed in power for a decade and a half after gassing his own people; no one in Israel has been prosecuted over their use of white phosphorus). You actually have to decide that they're too heinous to have happen (usually after they've been used before).

That's why you avoid this shit.

And that's exactly what Gjallerhorn did. They came up with all this tech, including the A-V, and then once the world was pacified they promptly banned half of it as inhumane. They actively worked to make people revile it, in part so it would never be used against them. And if it was, they could then use that as justification to throw everything and the kitchen sink at whoever dared to do so.

Why is this show such a monotonous fucking borefest? Literally nothing matters in this series
>>
>>13991419
The problem is the show ostensibly wants you to start questioning the actions of the protagonists, but it still glorifies their actions. Even when the old man outright states that they all just want violence the show then goes out of it's way to show that Biscuit actually later chose the path of least resistance, deciding that returning with everyone was preferable to being an actual voice of reason. Further, Biscuit dying is intended to mark a turning point in Tekkadan's behavior, but this isn't any payoff since prior to this we've seen Biscuit to be a very useless foil to orga, usually acquiescing with an expression of "not again!" rather than actually modifying plans prior to his death. Heck, merribit and aniki steal this role a lot of the time, so their change in direction feels forced.

Then we have the formal problem of what the fight with Carta are trying to invoke. What Mika did this episode is not much different from what not!guts did when Carta landed on the island and started giving a speech. That was played for laughs. This time even the girl agrees it makes more sense not to duel and to just overwhelm them and everyone is overall being pretty jovial about it, but then Mika is doing what he normally does and suddenly the girl thinks it's grotesque and Merribit starts asking people to please think of the children. At the same time Mika is being a cool badass again, but this time we're supposed to feel bad that he's doing what he normally does which the show has glorified before. It's inconsistent. It tries to be complex but when you look at it from formal and structural standpoints, it's mess.

They never did. Why would that suddenly change?

Their entire purpose was to give Gusion to Tekkadan, the MS AV system they installed in the Graze and the ship they used as bait, they were a convenient plot devise

Why did IBO have to be like this? I just wanted a slightly comfy Gundam story about PMC Child soldier Bros with questionable mental health going on adventures and slowly becoming well adjusted.
IBO should've been this
>Eps 1-4 stay the same
>get Kude to earth by ep 8
>spend the rest of the series taking odd jobs and being episodic world/character building while McGills slowly shifts the political world into chaos with his background plans
>Tekkadan manages to stay out of it until they take a sketchy job that they were given little info on
>the employer was McGills and he gets some of them killed including Orga
>Mika has learned to think for himself by now and takes charge of Tekkadan to get revenge Big Boss style
>Tekkadan aquires WMDs and becomes a major threat to Gjallarhorn
