The game is a bit hard to understand the first time round. Playing it again now and I only got the hang of things after I fucked up the first few events. Anyhow, what I mean is choices like this will affect your relationship with Rei and also give you a good judge of where you're at. Example, Rei in the entry plug here doesn't cover herself up which shows she's not attracted to you yet.

Scenes like this can also show you if Rei likes Shinji more. Example, she tells him to fuck off when he asks can they eat lunch together.
Shinji, you dirty dog. Also, Rei as a tree shows that she neither likes you nor Shinji. If she liked him, she would be the princess and if you the witch with the poison apple. However, those also require her to be at a certain social level and other stat shit.
In any case, it's not something to worry about early or mid game. It takes a while to build the love meter unless you spam buy her food at the diner with every penny you got and such.

What kinda training do you recommend for the beginning?

Depends what Rei ending you want, but you're gonna want to first get her to social status to accept clothes and then proceed from there. The social stat is necessary for social events like the summer festival. I think it has to be about 150-200 for that. I'm not sure.
The best training for that would be school and mental training. Mental training increases more than just knowledge as it's also a "one to one" training with Rei that you do yourself which gets me thinking that it may increases your love meter as well. I'm unsure, but it's worth a thought.
However, I think that sending Rei to school increases her love meter with Shinji because while school increases stats all across the board, you can increase them separately with the other options. Again, unsure but it's worth a thought.
After social status, you're gonna want to get her Will Defense/Mind Power up to 120 to get anywhere else so martial art bow training shit increases that.
Love Status Requirements
Will Defense 120+
Sensitivity 120+
Social Skills 120+
Pheromone 100+
