What went wrong?

It's at that point that Kawakami's health started getting really screwed, I think.
Other than that it was fucking great.
>>
Toei budget

With actual money behind it this would've been the quintessential super robot show.
>>
I loved LODM, it had good fights, the characters were likable, and the plot had a good "adventurous" feeling.

Is the original Gaiking show subbed?
>>
Dick should have died but other than that I love it it

Disckotek has it licensed
>>
>>13985917
that bit in the last episode was such bullshit, way to take the meaning out of his sacrifice
>>
>>13985922

I mean I don't mind him living really, but it just made no sense, they'd surely salvage his tiger mech and see his exploded corpse

Blame Sanjo's habit of not bringing himself to killing mentors/allies/partners, ever since Dragon Quest: Dai's Adventure. It's a wonder that Kamen Rider Drive somehow managed to be the exception.
>>
>>13986151

Well see not killing off characters is all well and good, you don't have to mow down folk like you're Tomino or some shit.

But if you're not gonna kill your cast then just you know don't kill your cast. Don't pretend like you did for drama and then SURPRISE THEY'RE OKAY BECAUSE...MAGIC!

Animation was pretty spotty, even when they redid a lot of it for the DVDs. Still not a fan of the pink hippo episodes. Other than that, can't think of too much, it's my favorite /m/ show for a reason.

Let's be fair guys, he was still recovering... how long later was the epilogue, ten years or something after the show? And Dick's fucking RICH. That wasn't just something he trivially recovered from.

The only stuff I can add would be:
- it was obviously cut short
- everyone but Puria got a scene or two that explained their background and/or how they got onto the Daikuu Maryuu
- who and what the fuck were all those non-Darius aliens like all the wacky guys in the cantina or that guy that Dick played cards with?
- who the hell kidnaps a marine biologist, a hobo and a tailor to build alien war machines?
- the composer straight up reused music from Yamato Takeru
- still no high-budget sequel and there never will be

I'd go for ANY type of sequel, really.

I don't think Toei is smart enough to throw money into a non-profitable title.
>>
>>13993512
Yeah. They really haven't done ANY super robot shows since it tanked. They've accepted the only shows little japanese boys watch these days involve card games.

Honestly, not much. Apart from having a few really low budget episodes, and the tragedy with Ruri's voice actress, LoD Gaiking was nearly flawless, in my opinion. It's simply one of the best MotW shows of it's decade.

Having said that, I'd have loved it if Vulking and Raiking had more screen time, especially Vulking.

>tragedy with Ruri's voice actress
Haven't seen, what happens?
>>
>really no budget episodes
fixed
They have 3 months of funding from toei and no sponsors. Other than the studio crew everybody worked for free.

>>13993623
She died a while ago.
>>
>>13993623
>Haven't seen, what happens?
She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer either during the production of LodG or very soon before hand.

One of the reasons the show was cut short, and the reason her character doesn't have very many lines in the last few episodes, was because her illness progressed to the point were it was hard for her to work.

She finally dies in 2011.
>>
>>13993520
And given the quality of their last few shows it would be a QUALITY ridden mess
>>
>>13993662
No that was in 2008 when she still has lots of work in hand. LodG was 2006.
>>
>>13993662
>the show was cut short

See, I heard it was expanded from when it was originally supposed to end to fit in time meant for another show that wasn't airing yet. Which is why Episode 31 is a fake out ending.

>They've accepted the only shows little japanese boys watch these days involve card games.
Funnily enough, Sunrise has a pretty good track record with those, if Battle Spirits is any indication. Kinda worried about Katsumi Hasegawa being the current head writer, though.

>>13993824
Sort of reminds me of Super Robot Red Baron in that sense, if true (although in that case they presumably had time to remove the planned ending).
>>
>>13993824
>Which is why Episode 31 is a fake out ending.
That doesn't really fit though. Episode 31 isn't really close to the point where there could be a season break/new show debut, it'd need to be around episode 26.

It was too childish to me, the mc was run of the mill, the MOTW and the generals were nothing unique or special.

Isn't 39 also considered to be the magic "this was supposed to be around 50 episodes long but cut short" number?
>>
>>13994366
>>13994830
In that area, yeah, but as far as I know LoDM also started airing early.

The show started in early November and ended in late September, there's some form of oddity going on there no matter what, that's not normal.

So, what happened to the guy scrubbing this show?
>>
>>13995277
Aura Road Subs? Last thing he posted was the first episode of SD Gundam Gaiden in november and nothing more since then.
