Why are westerners better at live action mecha films than the Japs?
>>
>>13982993
Using PacRim to shitpost? That's pretty low anon. You disgust me.
>>
>>13983014
What do you mean?

PR is one of the best live-action mecha ever made and Japanese film industry is no where near the same level as movies like PR, Iron Man, Transformers, etc...Even the last Robocop was better.
>>
>>13983027
RoboCop is just 8man meets Metal Heroes. The Jiban movie is way better.

The last mech godzilla movie is cool, also budget.
>>

This is actually something I want to know, why is japanese live action acting so fucking wooden or incredibly overdramatic??
>>

>>

You're right, it was a good movie, but it wasn't a good remake
>>
>>13983061
Uh...Transformers is an American movie.
>>
Literally the most expensive movie ever made in Japan cost $49,300,000. Pacific Rim cost $190,000,000.

Even in 1990 Robot Jox was an ultra-cheap movie at $10,000,000. (For comparison, Die Hard 2, in the same year, cost $70 million.) Godzilla vs. Biollante was a year earlier and that cost $5,000,000, and 1991's Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah cost $12,000,000.

Hollywood's gigantic compared to the Japanese film industry, and it can make a ton more money off of international distribution than Japanese movies can. Nobody in Japan is doing a $200,000,000 robot movie. Hell, they're not even making a $10,000,000 one unless it has "Godzilla" in the title.
>>
>>13983075
Based on a franchise that was basically imported from the East. If Hasbro wasn't able to strike a deal with TakaraTomy there wouldn't be any Bayformers in the first place.
>>
>>13983098
Nobody cares and ultimately doesn't matter because Transformers is NOT a Japanese production.
>>

Transformers 4 is actually a Chinese co-production.

And stop responding to that guy. He knows and he's not really this stupid, he's just baiting.
>>
>>13983125
>tfw the future of Hollywood is in the hands of Chinese and Qatari corporations
>>
>>13983108

Actually....time to put nerd glasses on.

Transformers originated as TakaraTomy's Diaclone line, where the giant robots weren't sentient aliens, but human-made, piloted mechas. When Hasbro struck a deal with TakaraTomy, they rewrote the story and made them into what we know as G1 Transformers today.
>>

Because live action /m/ requires different thought than animated /m/? Or maybe because you just haven't seen a lot of Japanese live action /m/. I know I haven't. Japanese kaiju>American kaiju evrtime i do agree with you but I also don't watch alot of Japanese movies outside gamera and godzilla films.

You have to be at least 18 to post here.
>>
>>13983152
They should, they've got the cash to spare. Compared to any Japanese studio, the Chinese co-producers for AoE can probably top Space Battleship Yamato's CGI budget, five times over.
>>
>>13983054
Muh humanity can't overwrite electronic programmings, like how I can't turn off my smartphone through sheer will, it's ridiculous.
>>
>>13983146
They also took from another different toyline, that's where you get gadget Transformers, like gun Megatron, casette recorder Soundwave and microscope Perceptor. I rather prefer those than vehicles. Also there's Jetfire toy being Valkyries from Macross.
>>
>>13983152
Only with foreign movie productions, don't get your hopes up with their locals, especially anything scifi.
>>
>>13983240

Especially with current media censorship bullshit going on in China, like where they forbid showing any sci-fi stuff like time travel.
>>
>>13982993
Western budgets are more inflated than a DeviantArtist's fetishes.
>>
>>13983027

That's because nobody cares about the film industry in Japan. All the men are too busy working themselves to death or being shut in Otaku's hugging their body pillows and watching anime so Japan's live action entertainment industry is based around tv "variety" shows to entertain housewives.

Because western production companies actually give a damn and poor money into quality CGI instead of just putting a man in a monster suit. It's only natural that western mecha would look noticeably better than some tokusatsu shit the Japanese industry has been doing since the '50s.
>>

I fucking hated everything about that new movie. Got about a hour in before I stopped watching.
I didn't even base it off the original and just as it's own thing, and the issue was that it's political commentary and what it was trying to do was so on the nose that I felt like I was being talked to by a 4th Graders first Political Satire.
>>

Fuck you I was born in 1990 and I hate the Robocop reboot with a passion.
>>

There was that japanese giant robot movie that had a magic moon-themed main mech and a box-themed earth mech.

The mech's pilot was a young woman who was sweating profoundly in the cockpit and I was thinking: "I wanna lick that sweat off her inner tights" the whole time.

Pacrim didn't deliver on that.

The JF toy was a repackaged VF-1, but I have never seen JF drawn exactly as a VF-1 during the G1 cartoon.

You are going to have to post a screencap to prove that info.

I thought going back in time to defeat the Japanese at Nanking, absorbing the Kuomintang, and ending the movie by uniting the world under a new enlightened era of Chinese rule would be right up their alley.

Yeaaaaaaaaaah, no

let's just ignore the transformers movies, chappie, that Hugh Jackoff boxing robot movie..... the west sure is better....
>>
>>13986872
The West has a vast pool of acting talent and crews that they can afford to make mistakes and learn from them. Japs are only good at making jackoff toons. They come up with some interesting ideas, but they're better off in Western hands to flesh out.

I'm not saying I don't believe you, because I do, but I have 2 questions

2. Was it a Kurosawa movie? Because he was infamous for going over budget.

Well fuckloads more money is one major factor.

Del Toro just took, by his own admission (which is fine cause it was the point) a whole slew of inspirations from mecha anime and kaju films, and with his name being able to summon up Hollywood's big dollar muscle was able to make this.

This so much. I only saw SDF Macross (the original, not the Robotech adaptation), but I'm hyped as fuck for a Robotech movie. It has all the elements to be a good blockbuster: mechas, cool action sequences, a relatable love stpry and giant aliens. Seems hard to fuck up.
>>
>>13991339
Does robotech have the right to animate Valkyries anymore? I'd think that they'd finally get fucked over by constant abuse of a loophole/grey area in an old contract. After that, say goodbye to your money. And if that formula pumped out blockbusters then we wouldn't be stuck with the lack of mecha titles in Hollywood as we do now

Japs can do good mecha, but the international community wants epic CGI and thinks practical effects are shit. Godzilla is like the old exception to the rule

Because westerners make a lot of action movies?

When you think western movies, you think action movies like the marvel movies. When you do a lot of something, you'll get somewhat familiar with it. They know what the people want to see and what sells. For some reason people like unfitting snarky jokes in their action movies, and we're getting the snarky jokes in almost every damn action movie.

Besides, they throw a lot more money into their movies. When you throw so much money into them, you tend to get something worth that money.

No, they don'thave the right to animate anything Macross or Southern Cross anymore. On the other hand, they still have the rights of Genesis Climber MOSPEADA, which includes the Legioss fighter, and that's pretty much the same thing as a Valkyrie.

>if that formula pumped out blockbusters

I see your point, but this formula has already 3 elements commonly seen in blockbusters: love story, action sequences and aliens. Just adding giant robots wouldn't do any harm. You're right, there's a lack of mecha titles in Hollywood, but Pacific Rim and Transformers (even if it's shit) did pretty well at the box-office, so I don't see why a Robotech movie would bomb, if it was made by competent people, of course.
