It wasn't that Minmay was an idol, or that she had an incredible magic singing voice, it was the lack of any culture or art with the Zentradi that saved their day.
The moral of SDF was for cultures to overcome their differences and come together. But that's not what the Macross franchise took away.
Instead we get 'music is magic' when 7 comes around. And 7 was fucking awesome, but that's only because it was working in a world where magic music wasn't suppose to be a thing. It went over the top with it. But there's the problem.
7 broke Macross. Nothing could be as over the top as it, and at the same time the franchise wanted to try and top it.
The real solution here if for Macross to shift towards a lower key story and explore different genres of music, such as Plus and Zero (albeit Zero is by no means a perfect Macross). The take away should be exploring different cultures, not confining yourself to idols.

Plus and Zero were OVAs (OVAs that didn't do great financially I might add) that didn't really sell themselves on their music. A very large part of Macross TV marketing is how many CDs it can sell and the easiest is through the familiar genre of pop. There's a reason Fire Bomber became a household name in Japan when 7 was airing, there's a reason why Frontier sold all the fucking CDs and it's because Japan is really into that. You say "explore different types of music" but that's like saying "The Valkyries should just be in Battroids the whole time and not have the other two transformations". It's part of the franchise, too iconic to change, too many people don't want it to change and has been an iconic part of the marketing
I honestly cannot understand the problem here. Each Macross show is very different and that includes the music. I hesitate to call a good chunk of Frontier's music traditional idol stuff. Only SDF is focused on idol music in the classic sense. Modern idol music is genre breaking as well so I don't understand why Walkure is already being pigeonholed into a specific corner.
Only 7 has the music as the main aspect of the show. Every other Macross had a balance with the other layers of the plot and characters. One of my biggest issues with the Frontier TV series was how it felt like when it came to actual character development, the only one they seriously even considered was Alto and Sheryl.

How are the character arcs of Sheryl and Alto any worse than anything in SDF? Minmay learns to be a bit less of a bitch, maybe. Misa overcomes her old feelings, lightens up, and loves Hikaru by episode 26 leaving ten episodes of nothing but the viewer being frustrated that he won't just stay with her. Hikaru grows up and makes many mistakes along the way but ends up a good man.
Everyone else in the show is negligible (except for Roy and Claudia who don't develop in the show but are well rounded characters who have major roles in the development of the leads) but in Frontier, Ozma, Cathy, Michel, and to a lesser extent that other kid and Ranka all go through their own arcs and develop. Alto and Sheryl get the focus but the side characters aren't stagnant. I would say Frontier has the best characters of any Macross.

You know This is something I have trouble getting people to understand in magazine interviews. For example, youve got World War II, and then you have lots of movies based on that event, right? They are all fictional. Theyre all based on a war that actually took place, but they are all different. For example, in period dramas you have Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu, but there are so many Oda Nobunagas and Tokugawa Ieyasus. The producers look at the real event and adapt the character according to their wishes. The actors and lines also change, so the character changes. Its that kind of feeling. OK, so in the timeline you have a movie called DYRL that was released, does that mean that the TV series is the true story? Well, you have the SDF-1 that supposedly fell from the sky, and then a story was made about the subsequent history and was televised. Then that became a movie. Then later, there was a Macross 7 incident, and a TV series was made about that. Thats basically how I see it.

Did you have a problem with singers being in the midst of a battle in SDF or Frontier? Even if they weren't actively firing weapons, they still had a defined, active role in the conflict, because in Macross, music has repeatedly been demonstrated to be a powerful tool with significant tactical and strategic uses. Honestly, it would stretch my suspension of disbelief quite a bit more if people still consistently failed to acknowledge the well-established value of music on the battlefield.

In SDF music happened to be a form of earth culture that could be easily transmitted and weaponised over the communications systems. SDF was about Zentraedi freaking out and reacting to Earth culture because they had no concept of it, not because music was magical.

Bullshit. Music is what gets the spotlight, but as a general rule (particularly in 7 and Frontier), it's there as a placeholder. In 7 it's used as a way to tap into human emotions, and in Frontier it serves a similar role as a focus for fold-wave communication.
The music itself has never been magical.
