No. As far as Bernie knew, he absolutely had to kill the Alex and its pilot in order to stop Zeon's bullshit. And as far as Chris knew she had to shoot down the Zaku before it trashed the colony.
And Chris has an edge. She hamburgered another Zeek just a few days prior to fighting Bernie, so we know she's capable of icing a man and coming out without significant mental trauma despite being a rookie. Knowing, not just intellectually, that there was another human being in the other suit would have made things harder, but the ultimate end would have likely been the same.

It's more likely he was trying to avoid the reactor, and he can't exactly poke at the pilot like Chris can with a beam saber.
I just started watching 0080. Finished the first episode.
When the fuck does this take place? The title, Hy-Goggs, and a new Gundam suggest the obvious 0080, but the war seems to still be going on and the kids were acting like the Feds don't have any mobile suits yet.
I'm trying to watch all the OVAs in chronological order, so this is leaving me confused.
