The show itself is fine. The problem is all the mouthbreathing retards and normalfags that think it's some kind of revolutionary masterpiece when it's a merely okay show that is the rule rather than the exception.
At least the people who act the same way about Evangelion have a bit of an actual point. It may have blended elements from a lot of different shows, but that particular combination was fairly unique and it had a clear effect on shows that came after it. It also felt much more personal than Gurren Lagann could

Ishikawa's writing is well above and beyond of anything Nakashima could cook up.
The absolute mess that was KLK is simply proof of his hack-like and "make up shit as I go along" writing.
Ishikawa on the other hand not only wrote the entirety of Getter Robo Saga, he also has one of the best adaptations of Makai Tensho.

Not the best, but pretty good. It suffers from a fairly tedious first half (partially excused because you later realize its main purpose was build-up) and a somewhat underwhelming ending (in the TV series).
The movies go some way towards fixing those problems, but have issues of their own, particularly the stripping out of the great world-building from the second half of the series due to time constraints.
Overall I think the show deserves praise and is better than the vast majority of popular anime.
